2015 TELUS Cup award winners announced; semifinals set for Saturday

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Que. – The 2015 TELUS Cup, Canada’s 42nd National Midget Championship, held its awards banquet Friday night at the Hotel Universel. The tournament’s awards committee named the recipients of the seven individual awards.

The awards were based on the tournament’s preliminary round, which ran from Monday to Friday.

The 2015 TELUS Cup award winners are:
TELUS Most Valuable Player – Owen Sillinger (Regina Pat Canadians)
Top Goaltender – Kyle Jessiman (Grenadiers de Châteauguay)
Top Forward – Owen Sillinger (Regina Pat Canadians)
Top Defensive Player – Jake Tesarowski (Regina Pat Canadians)
Most Sportsmanlike Player – Mathieu Samuel (Albatros du Collège Notre-Dame)
Top Scorer – Owen Sillinger (Regina Pat Canadians)
Esso Scholarship – Mikael Recine (Grenadiers de Châteauguay)

After an exciting week of preliminary round play, the semifinals are set for Saturday, April 25.

The first-place Regina Pat Canadians (4-0-1) meet the fourth-place Toronto Young Nationals (2-3) in the early semifinal (2 p.m. ET), while the Grenadiers de Châteauguay (4-1), who took second place, will face the Strathmore Bisons (3-2), who finished third, in the late semifinal (6 p.m. ET).

The gold medal game will be held Sunday, April 26 at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT and will be shown on TSN2/RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcasters (check your local listings). Both semifinals and the bronze medal game can be seen live via FASTHockey webcast through the game summary page at www.hockeycanada.ca/teluscup.

A number of future NHLers have taken part in Canada’s National Midget Championship since its inception in 1974, including 56 first-round draft picks, three No. 1 selections (Gord Kluzak, Wendel Clark and Sidney Crosby) and nine future Hockey Hall of Fame inductees (Glenn Anderson, Ron Francis, Mike Gartner, Al MacInnis, Larry Murphy, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Denis Savard and Steve Yzerman).
