Three Oil Kings, Plus Coaching Staff, Participate in AMHL All-Star Game
February 8, 2012

A season to remember just keeps getting better for the Leduc Oil Kings, as three members of the 2012 TELUS Cup hosts, as well as the entire Oil Kings staff, represented Leduc at the 2012 AMHL All-Star Game, Feb. 5 at Bill Hunter Arena in Edmonton.

Two Oil Kings, defenceman Jarrett Brown and goaltender Brett Zarowny, were selected by the league’s coaches as North Division First Team All-Stars, while forward Hayden Dawes was also on the ice in Edmonton.

Brown, who serves as Oil Kings captain, wore the ‘C’ for the North Division in the game.

All three got involved in the North’s 8-5 victory – Dawes set up Sherwood Park’s Taylor Cooper to cut the South Division lead to 5-4 late in the second period, and Brown added the final North Division goal in the third, while Zarowny gave up two goals on 18 shots in his 30 minutes of work.

Zarowny has been among the league’s top netminders, ranking first in shutouts (five) and second in wins (14) and goals against average (2.23). Dawes leads the Oil Kings with 35 points (21 goals, 14 assists) in 31 games, good for 11th in AMHL scoring, while Brown is Leduc’s highest-scoring blue-liner, with 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 31 games.

Head coach Greg Stamler and assistants Jim Kerr, Josh Renaud and Randall Weber were behind the North Division bench for the All-Star festivities, with team manager Dan Abt and trainer Heather Pearson also taking part.

With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Oil Kings sit atop the North Division with a 23-7-1 record, seven points ahead of second-place St. Albert and tied with the Red Deer Optimist Rebels for the AMHL’s best record.

Leduc is trying to follow in the footsteps of the last Alberta team to host the National Midget Championship – Red Deer won both the AMHL championship and Pacific Region title in 2007, when it reached the gold medal game at the TELUS Cup on home ice.
