CALGARY, Alta. – Canada’s National Sledge Team is in Nagano, Japan, to take part in the Japan Four Nations Tournament from Jan. 17-22, facing off against Japan, Korea and Norway.

It marks the fourth time Canada has travelled to the Far East for the tournament – it won gold in 2008 in Asahikawa, beating Norway 3-2 in the gold medal game, and again in 2009 in Nagano, defeating the U.S. 5-0 in the final. It earned the silver medal last year in Nagano, finishing second in the round robin tournament shortened by an earthquake.

“After the excitement of the World Sledge Hockey Challenge in November, the team is really looking forward to the challenge ahead in Nagano,” said National Sledge Team head coach Mike Mondin. “We know that we are facing three very strong opponents, so it will be another tremendous week for sledge hockey.”

Canada opened its 2011-12 season last November, winning the gold medal at the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Calgary, including a 4-1 victory over the United States in the final.

Canada’s National Sledge Team will face the United States in a three-game series in Buffalo, N.Y., at the end of February before travelling to Hamar, Norway, in April for the 2012 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship.
