ROCKLAND, Ont. – Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team defeated the United States 6-4 on Sunday at the Canadian International Hockey Academy, winning two of three games in a series against the U.S. Women’s Under-18 Team.

Canada also beat the United States 3-2 on Friday, while the U.S. won the first game 3-2 on Thursday. Friday’s match-up marked the first time since that Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team defeated its American rivals, when they won 5-4 in overtime in Chicago, Ill., to claim their first-ever IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship gold medal.

On Sunday, Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont.) kicked off the Canadian comeback midway through the first period, scoring an unassisted goal at 8:58 after the Americans had scored the game’s first two goals. The U.S. restored its two-goal lead in the first minute of the second period,  but Stacey again came through for Canada at 16:40, while Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man.) scored on a power play with 28 seconds left in the middle frame to tie the game up at 3-3 going into intermission.

Emily Clark (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Rebecca Kohler (St. Thomas, Ont.) put the Canadians ahead by two in the first two minutes of the third, and after the Americans drew to within one at 5-4, Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) scored to cap off Canada’s win.

The three-game series attracted more thousands of fans to the Canadian International Hockey Academy, some of the largest crowds Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team has ever seen.

“The support our under-18 team had from Rockland and the surrounding area has been outstanding,” said Kalli Quinn, director of female national teams for Hockey Canada. “We’re thrilled to have had the chance to bring the best young female hockey players from across the country to such an enthusiastic community.”

The 22-player roster was chosen following Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp, held August 7-14, also at the Canadian International Hockey Academy. The team was assembled by head coach Pierre Alain (Mirabel, Que./St-Jérôme, Collégial AA); assistant coaches Jim Fetter (Waterloo, Ont./St. Cloud State University, WCHA) and Carla MacLeod (Calgary, Alta./Mount Royal University, ACAC) and goaltending coach Perry Wilson (LaSalle, Ont./University of Windsor, OUA), in consultation with Quinn, Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s head scout of women’s national team programs, and her team of scouts.

Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team featured:

• Six players who won a silver medal with Canada’s National Women’s Under-18-Team at the 2011 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship in Stockholm, Sweden in January (Ambrose, Dufault, Kohler, Mercer, Roesler, Stacey)
• One player who helped Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team win its first-ever gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship in Chicago, Ill. (Ambrose)
• Two members of the Alberta team that won gold at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, N.S. in February (Maschmeyer, Sowchuk)
• One member of the Notre Dame Hounds, who won the gold medal at the 2011 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, in St. Albert, Alta., in April (Woods)
• Two players who participated in the 2011 IIHF High Performance Women’s Camp in Bratislava, Slovakia in July (Bunton, Krzyzaniak)

Hockey Canada scouts, along with the team’s coaching staff, will continue to evaluate players with their club teams during the 2011-12 season, in preparation for selecting the Canadian team that will compete at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey Under-18 Women’s World Championship in the Czech Republic in January.
