CALGARY, Alta. – Eighty of the top young female players in the country will step on to the ice starting this weekend at the Canadian International Hockey Academy in Rockland, Ont., for Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team training camp and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp.

Prior to the two camps, four under-22 goaltenders and four under-18 netminders will take to the ice today and Saturday for Canada’s National Women’s Program goaltending camp. Both the National Women’s Under-22/Development Team training camp and National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp open Sunday, August 7, with the under-22 camp running through Tuesday, August 16 and the under-18 camp taking place until Sunday, August 14.

During the two camps, Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team members will be split into Blue and Yellow teams, while Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team candidates will be split into Red and White squads. All four teams will take part in several practices and intersquad games.

Following Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp, players will be chosen for a three-game series against the United States’ Women’s Under-18 Select Team, scheduled for August 18, 19 and 21, also in Rockland.

Hockey Canada scouts and coaching staffs for both teams will continue to evaluate players when they return to their club teams for the 2011-12 season, in order to decide who will represent Canada at the 2012 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship next January in the Czech Republic and which under-22 players will compete for their country at the 2012 MLP Cup next January in Germany.

Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, will also be holding several female development activities, including seminars for coaches and officials, skills camps for Novice, Atom and Peewee players, as well intermission mini-games and Experience a Dream. The Experience a Dream program will give six young girls the chance to join under-18 players for off-ice and on-ice warm-ups and stand on the ice for the national anthem during the Canada-United States three-game series.

To learn more about how female teams or players can participate in intermission mini games, please contact Trina Radcliffe, Hockey Canada’s manager of female development, for more information at [email protected].

NOTE TO MEDIA: Kristen Lipscombe, Hockey Canada’s coordinator of communications, will be on site in Rockland for both camps. Please contact her for any interview requests at (403) 826-4819 or [email protected].
