Team Canada to Play for Bronze Medal at 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Players and Staff to Return to Canada on Sunday, August 19th

HODONIN, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team has qualified for the bronze medal game against Russia at the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka.

Canada beat the Czech Republic 4-1 on Thursday to finish the round robin with two wins and an overtime loss, good for seven points and second place in Pool A. Russia finished second in Pool B. The two teams will meet for bronze on Saturday in Piestany, Slovakia (6:30 p.m. local, 12:30 p.m. ET).

Sweden finished first in Pool A with nine points, and will play in the gold medal game against Finland, which won Pool B. The gold medal game is scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. local, 1:00 p.m. ET in Hodonin.

On Thursday night in Hodonin, the Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Stepan Novotny at 9:42 of the first period. Canada tied it up when Chris Doyle (Charlottetown, PE/ PEI, QMJHL) snapped a shot past Czech netminder Dominik Furch at 16:36.

In the second period, Canada took the lead at 8:02 when Kevin King (Calgary, AB/ Kootenay, WHL) directed in a perfect pass from Shawn Lalonde (Orleans, ON/ Belleville, OHL). It was Lalonde’s second assist of the game, and he was later named Canada’s Player of the Game. Jordan Caron (Sayabec, QC/ Rimouski, QMJHL) scored at 9:35 of the second to make it 3-1. Alex Pietrangelo (King City, ON/ Niagara, OHL) rounded out the scoring in the third.

Peter Delmas (Bedford, NS/ Lewiston, QMJHL) earned the win for Canada in net.
