TURIN, Italy - A group of Canadian university hockey players, together as an all-star team from Atlantic Canada, beat Russia 3-1 to claim gold at the World University Games.

Rob Hennigar scored twice and Scott Hotham added another to help the hockey team claim its first gold in the event since 1991.  The hockey team was comprised of players from the Atlantic conference. Steinburg, the head coach at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, was behind the bench at the 2001 Games when the AUS last represented Canada.

The Canadians had squandered a 2-0 lead to Russia during the round robin in what ended up a 2-2 tie. First-period goals by Hennigar and Hotham on Saturday gave Canada that same lead again, but they wouldn't blow it this time.

Paul Drew turned aside 21 shots for the win for Canada.

The lead was down to 2-1 until Hennigar scored the insurance goal with just over five minutes to play.

It helped Canada finish on a high note at the event, which features student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28 who are enrolled full time at a post-secondary institution.
