At a banquet at the Gallagher Centre in Yorkton on Friday night, the all-star team of the inaugural World Junior A Challenge was announced. Four of the six competing teams had players named to the team. Russia and Canada West were the only teams to place more than one player on the team.

The following players were named to the World Junior A Challenge All-Star Team:

GOALTENDER – Jaroslav Janus (Slovakia)

The 17-year-old Janus played in two of Slovakia’s three games, putting up a goals against average of 3.00, and a .900 save percentage. Janus, who also played for Slovakia at the World Under-17 Challenge in Regina in January, made 39 saves in a 4-1 round robin loss to Canada East, and 15 saves in Slovakia’s 8-2 quarterfinal win over Belarus.

DEFENSEMAN – Deron Cousens (Canada West)

Cousens (Georgetown, ON), who plays for the BCHL’s Penticton Vees, has been the leader of Canada West’s defense thus far in the tournament, playing a stifling defense while scoring a goal and adding three assists, good for second in the tournament in scoring among defensemen.

DEFENSEMAN – Maxim Isaev (Russia)

The top scoring defenseman at the World Junior A Challenge, Isaev has scored once and added six assists in three games, leaving him tied for the tournament scoring lead. The 6-foot-1 Isaev has been the picture of consistency on the Russian blueline, picking up two assists in Russia’s tournament-opening 6-2 loss to Canada West, a goal and two assists in a 7-1 win over Belarus, and two assists in the 7-1 quarterfinal win over Germany.

FORWARD – Louie Caporusso (Canada East)

Caporusso (Woodbridge, ON), a member of the OPJHL’s St. Michael’s Buzzers, picked up two assists in Canada East’s two round robin victories. But he makes the team as much for his leadership as for his offense. One of Canada East’s alternate captains, the 17-year-old Caporusso has already committed to the University of Michigan for next season.

FORWARD – Sergey Korostin (Russia)

Playing on a line with projected first round NHL pick Vitaly Karamnov, Korostin finds himself in fifth in tournament scoring, with one goal and four assists in three games. The 77th ranked NHL prospect, according to the latest rankings released by International Scouting Services, Korostin should see that number rise after a strong performance in Yorkton.

FORWARD – Kyle Turris (Canada West)

Turris (New Westminster, BC/Burnaby Express, BCHL) got his tournament started off on the right foot, scoring the first four goals for his team in their 6-2 win over Russia. The 17-year-old Turris sits tied for the tournament lead in scoring with seven points (5G 2A) in just two games, joined by linemate Casey Pierro-Zabotel (Kamloops, BC/Merritt Centennials, BCHL) and fellow all-star Maxim Isaev from Russia. He has already committed to the University of Wisconsin for next season.
