Canada Advances to The Semi-Finals at The 2005 IIHF World Women's Championship

Canada will play Finland on Friday, April 8th (10am ET / 7am PT - TSN/RDS)

CALGARY – Team Canada advanced to the semi-finals of the 2005 IIHF World Women’s Championship and will play Finland on Friday, April 8th after handing host team Sweden a 10-0 loss Wednesday.  Canada recorded a perfect 3-0-0 record in Pool A, outscoring their opposition 35-0 in three games, and will face-off against Pool B runner-up Finland in the semi-final on Friday, April 8th.

Friday’s semi-final game will be aired live on TSN/RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcaster at 10:00 am ET / 7:00am PT.  The other semi-final game will feature Pool B winner Team USA vs Pool A runner-up Sweden.

The winning teams from both semi-final games on Friday, will meet to play in the gold medal game on Saturday, April 9, at 2:00pm ET/11:00am PT (broadcast live by TSN/RDS). 

Canada had three victories by large margins through the round robin of the 2005 IIHF World Women’s Championship.  After opening with a 13-0 victory over Kazakhstan, Team Canada continued their stellar play against Russia defeating their hockey rivals 12-0.  Finally, on Wednesday, despite facing their toughest competition to date, Canada defeated Sweden 10-0 in front of a boisterous home crowd.

Canada has won all eight previous World Women’s Championships, and is now only two wins away from tying the IIHF record for nine consecutive World Championships with the Soviet Union Men’s Team.
