Halifax/Quebec Named As Canada's Bid Group in Effort to Host 2007 IIHF Men's World Hockey Championship

CALGARY, ALBERTA – The Canadian Hockey Association has selected the bid group of Halifax, NS and Quebec City, QC to now be Canada’s recommended candidate to the IIHF as host of the 2007 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

Two groups were bidding to move forward in the bid selection process: the Halifax, NS/Quebec City, QC bid and a bid from Winnipeg, MB/Saskatoon, SK. The selection process was overseen by the CHA’s Site Selection Committee and started in October 2002. The committee was comprised of Sheldon Lanchbery (Chair, CHA Board), Allan Matthews (Executive Vice-Chair, CHA Board), Bob Nicholson (President, CHA) and Scott Smith (Vice-president, Hockey Operations, CHA).

Canada will be one of four countries vying to host the 2007 Worlds, along with Germany, Russia and Sweden. The next steps for Canada in the bid process are as follows:

• The CHA will immediately recommend the Halifax, NS/Quebec City, QC bid to the IIHF as its recommended site for the 2007 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship;

• The IIHF will select a host site for the 2007 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship no later than .

The IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship is the premiere annual international hockey event, bringing together the top hockey playing nations in the World, running every year from the end of April through mid-May. Teams are comprised of top players from European leagues and NHL players not involved in the NHL playoffs. Slovakia won the World Championship in 2002, while Canada finished fifth.

Since the World Championship was held as a stand-alone event for the first time in 1930, Canada has never hosted this event. Canada has captured a total of 13 gold medals, including gold medals in 1994 and in 1997.
