Canada's Women's Under 22 Selection Camp Roster and Coaching Staff Announced
July 8, 2002

CALGARY, AB - The Canadian Hockey Association announced Monday that 29 players have been invited and will be attending Canada's 2002 Women's Under 22 team selection camp, which will be held in Toronto, ON from August 10-18, 2002.

Of the 29 players attending camp, 22 will be chosen to represent Canada when they face off in a three-game series against arch-rivals Team USA, August 19-25 in Lake Placid, USA.

Two notables attending the camp include Under 22 veterans and 2002 Winter Olympic gold medallists Cherie Piper and Charline Labonté. Gina Kingsbury and Gillian Apps, who have both represented Canada at the Under 22 level and have participated as members Canada's National Women's team, will also be attending the camp.

The CHA also announced on Monday, the coaching staff for Canada's Under 22 team. Karen Hughes, who has lead Canada's Under 22 team for the past two seasons, will be back as Head Coach. Assisting Hughes with the coaching duties will be University of Manitoba Head Coach Terry Matheson and the 2002 Team Saskatchewan Head Coach Laura Solberg.

Hughes, a Level 4 certified coach with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, brings a wealth of knowledge with both Under 22 and National Team experience. Hughes was an assistant coach with Canada's gold medal winning Olympic team in 2002.

Joining the 29 players at the Under 22 selection camp in Toronto will be 16 of Canada's best non-Olympic senior-aged players. These players will be attending camp to enhance competition and to be evaluated for the possibility of attending future National Women's Team Evaluation Camps.
