Canada and Czech Republic Settle on 1-1 Tie in Guelph, ON
GUELPH, ON - Canada's National Men's Team and the Czech Republic Team played to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night at the Guelph Memorial Gardens.
The Czech Republic opened the scoring at 5:27 of the second period, as Petr Tenkrat beat Team Canada goaltender Aaron Schweitzer, of Regina SK while on a power play. Jan Novak and Kamil Piros collected assists on the goal.
Brian Casey, of Grand Falls, NF, evened the score at 8:04 of the third period taking Chris Szysky's pass and putting the puck behind Zdenek Orct of the Czech Republic.
The goaltenders were the story the rest of the way. Canada's Schweitzer faced 12 shots in the second, while the Czech Republic's Orct made 10 saves in the third. Canada's record on this six-game tour of Ontario is 2-1-2.
"I think we showed alot of character as a team," said Mike Johnston, head coach of the National Men's Team. "After playing five games. We fought back in the third period and had four or five great chances to win the game."
The two teams meet again Wednesday, April 7th, 1999 at the Ottawa Civic Centre. The game starts at 7:30 pm and will mark the end of this series. The game also marks the final game of the three-game tournament for the Motorola Canada Hockey Award. The series has the Czech Republic ahead in points 3-1.
