Canada's National Hockey Team Blanks Team Japan 7-0

SAPPORO, Japan -- Jason Young and Sean Selmser each scored twice as Team Canada dominated an overmatched Japanese National Team from start to finish for a 7-0 victory in Game 5 of Canada's six-game tour of Japan on Wednesday night.

The teams complete the current tour on Thursday night in Sapporo. The six-game Japanese series is the second half of a 12-game 'home-and-home' series that saw the clubs make a six-game swing through Southern Alberta and B.C. in January. Canada has won 10 of the 11 games so far.

The outcome of this match was never in question, as Canada build a 3-0 first-period lead on goals by Young, Selmser and Kayle Short. In the second period, Young reinforced Canada's dominance and padded the team's lead by scoring his second of the game at 1:15 and Jimmy Roy made it 5-0 at 6:41.

Selmser and Mike Johnson added goals before the period was over to complete the scoring and a 40-minute blitz during which Canada outshot Japan 29-10.

'Finally, after eight days in Japan we put together a solid game from start to finish,' said Mike Johnston, Team Canada's general manager and associate coach. 'We have to give the Japanese credit, though.

'They are improving and have battled us hard both here and during our series in Canada.'

The series is designed, in part, to help Japan prepare to host the men's hockey tournament in at the Winter Games in Nagano in February 1998. Also aiding that effort is former Canadian National and Olympic team head coach Dave King. He has been serving as a consultant to the Japanese Ice Hockey Federation for two years and doubles as the manager of the National Team.

The Japanese club is composed of players competing for spots on the team that will represent Japan at the Olympics next year.
