Finland Upends Canada, 4-2, at Sweden Games Tournament
February 7, 1997

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Unbeaten Finland ran its won-lost record to 3-0 on Friday, erasing a 2-1 deficit with three-unanswered third-period goals to defeat Canada's National Team 4-2 at the Sweden Games international hockey tournament.

The loss left Canada with a 1-1-1 won-lost-tied mark and in second place in the five-team event, which concludes Saturday. Canada's final game is against the winless Czech Republic team.

The Finns, who have outscored their opposition 14-3 in the tournament, got goals from Olli Jokinen, Antti Tormanen and Marko Jantunen in the final period to secure the victory. The Finns roster is sprinkled with former National Hockey League players, like Tormanen (Ottawa Senators), Janne Ojanen (New Jersey), Hannu Virta (Buffalo) and Jarkko Varvio (Dallas).

For the Sweden Games, Team Canada bolstered its lineup with players like Sylvain Turgeon (Hartford, Montreal, New Jersey, Ottawa), Chris Lindberg (Calgary) and Marc Fortier (Quebec, Ottawa) and opened the tournament by defeating Sweden 2-1, then tying Russia 1-1 before meeting Finland, the class of the tournament.

Juha Lind gave Finland a 1-0 lead at 17:45 of the opening period, but Canada dominated the middle period. Ryan Duthie, on feeds from Brett Clark and Jason Young, tied the game at 6:26 of the second period on the power play, and Turgeon, the star for Canada's gold-medal team at the Spengler Cup in December, scored on assists from Xavier Majic and Fortier at 19:43 of the period.

'We worked hard to get a 2-1 lead after two periods, but had a slow to the third and that cost us the game,' said Team Canada head coach Andy Murray. 'The Finns have been the best team in the tournament, but we battled them hard.'

Team Canada returns to its home base in Calgary following on Monday for a week-long training block before leaving for a six-game tour in Japan against the Japanese National Team.
