WATERLOO (Ontario) - Canadian Hockey, in cooperation with the Father David Bauer Charitable Trust and the City of Waterloo, announced today that the national teams of Canada, the Czech Republic and Russia will compete for the Father David Cup from March 28-31, 1996, at the Waterloo Recreation Complex in a key preparation tournament before the 1996 World Championship in Vienna, Austria.

The Czech Republic, who finished fourth at the 1995 World Championship after losing 4-1 to Canada in the bronze medal match, will open the Father David Bauer Cup against the Canadians on Thursday, March 28 at 8 p.m.

The Russians, who ranked fifth in 1995, will face the Czech Republic on Friday, March 29 at 8 p.m., and Canada will meet Russia to complete round-robin action Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m., with live broadcast on both The Sports Network (TSN) and Le Réseau des Sports (RDS).

The first and second place teams will battle for the Father David Bauer Cup in the final on Sunday, March 31 at 8 p.m.

"This tournament is a great tribute to a man who has done so much for hockey development in Canada, and especially Canadian Hockey's national team program," said E.J. Bauer, chairman of the Father David Bauer Cup and nephew of one of Canada's hockey legends, Father David Bauer."The pride we have in all our national teams - from the under-18 squad, to the three-time world champion women's team, from the four-consecutive gold medal junior team to Tom Renney's dedicated full-time national team - can all be linked back to 1962 when Father David Bauer established the basis of the national team program under the watchful eye of Canadian Hockey's membership," adds Mr. Bauer.

Canadian national team head coach Tom Renney echoes the sentiments of Mr. Bauer. "Today's national team program brings so much to communities across Canada," says Renney.

"Not only do Canadians feel pride when their sons, friends and neighbours dedicate themselves to hockey through the national team program," notes Renney, "but our team gives a lot back to the community by participating in coaching and player clinics, autograph signings, school and hospital visits, and of course, exciting hockey."

Renney is also looking forward to the challenge of the Father David Bauer Cup tournament. "The Czechs and the Russians are always tough opponents, and at this time of year, they are in full swing in putting together their squads for the World Championship," concludes Renney. "The Father David Bauer Cup will be our last three-team competition before the 1996 World Championship in Vienna, so it also serve as a key opportunity for Mike (Johnston, assistant coach) and myself to evaluate our personnel and needs for our roster."

Renney and Johnston are expecting to name Canada's 22-player roster for the 1996 World Championship in mid-April, and then travel to Europe for a pre-competition camp before opening the world event against Slovakia on April 21.

The Father David Bauer Cup schedule is as follows (games at the Waterloo Recreational Complex):

Thursday, March 28 - Canada vs Czech Republic at 8 p.m.

Friday, March 29 - Russia vs Czech Republic at 8 p.m.

Saturday, March 30 - Canada vs Russia at 1 p.m.

Sunday, March 31 - Father David Bauer Cup final at 8 p.m.
