Game Story

TEAM ATLANTIC UPSETS ONTARIO RED ON DAY 1 AT U18s

Ashley Stratton (Mount Pearl, N.L./Ontario Hockey Academy, CAHS) tipped the puck past Ontario Red goaltender Sophie Wolf (Nepean, Ont./Nepean, PWHL) to open the scoring for Team Atlantic’s 2-1 upset over the three-time defending champion on Day 1 of competition in Quebec City.

The goal, assisted by Aimee O’Neill (Glace Bay, N.S./Cape Breton, NSFMHL), came at 11:43 of the second period, and was followed up less than two minutes when Maggie Connors (St. John’s, N.L./Shattuck-St. Mary’s, USHS) capitalized on a turnover at Ontario Red’s blue line to score the game-winner.

Sarah Fillier (Georgetown, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) cut Atlantic’s lead in half less than five minutes into the third frame, but Team Atlantic – backstopped by Maddie Beck (Lunenburg, N.S./St. Paul’s School, USHS) who made 31 saves in the game – held on for the win.
