2013 Esso Cup

North Bay Ice Boltz (ONT) 2 - Regina Rebels (WST) 1 (SO)

Dion dekes – and scores – to seal thrilling shootout win for Ontario

by Lyndsey Barton

BURNABY, B.C. – Chloe Dion (North Bay, Ont.) seemed as relaxed as a pro she skated down the ice, pulling the puck to the right, faking a shot, and then moving it to the left before putting it past the goal line in a shootout, to give the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario) a 2-1 win over the Regina Rebels (West) on the second day of preliminary action at the 2013 Esso Cup.

The first two periods started off a little slow, with both teams struggling to maintain control of the puck. Regina managed a few decent chances on net, with the most notable coming from Talia Terry (Regina, Sask.), as her quick snap shot landed easily into the glove of Sabrina Picard (Hearst, Ont.).

When the puck dropped in the second, Regina skated hard and took control for the majority of the period. Emma Waldenberger (Moose Jaw, Sask.) took a quick snap from the red line halfway through the period, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The third period began with several wrap-around attempts by Regina and a lot of battling for the puck along the boards. Waldenberger created another solid attempt chance for a goal, but her shot at the middle of the net was stopped by Picard.

The excitement and speed certainly picked up in the third, with more than 1,500 elementary school children cheering the teams on as the last 20 minutes ticked down on the clock, sending the game into five minutes of overtime, and eventually, a shootout.

It was Regina to crack the scoreboard first, with Talia Terry (Regina, Sask.) finding Hannah Heisler (Moose Jaw, Sask.) down low, and Heisler quickly poking it into the North Bay net at 7:21 in the final frame. The arena erupted in squeals of delight, as the youngsters in attendance that had waited patiently through most of the game finally got to see the first goal scored.

But the period’s most impressive plays came from Ontario’s push in the last five minutes. A quick pass from Corie Jacobson (Warren, Ont.) to Kaomi Barnhardt (North Bay, Ont.) should have been an easy goal into the empty right side of the net, but it just didn’t connect. A similar opportunity was made minutes later, as Dion expertly deked out a Regina player to put her in front of an open net, but she couldn’t find the mesh.

As time wound down, it looked like Regina might skate away with its second win of the tournament, but with only a minute left on the clock, North Bay head coach Darren Turcotte made the call to pull Picard and put an extra player on the offense. The smart decision paid off, with Dion and Courtney Geisler (Powassan, Ont.) setting up Kaitlyn McManus (Huntsville, Ont.)  on a pretty play. McManus took a beautiful shot that found the back of the net with only 13 seconds left on the clock.

The thrilling back-and-forth action continued into the extra frame, but neither team managed any strong chances, and five minutes of play quickly flew by, sending the game into the first shootout of the 2013 Esso Cup.

Neither of Regina’s shooters were able to get the puck past the opposition’s goaltenders, but North Bay’s Corie Jacobson (Warren, Ont.) and of course, highlight reel-worthy Dion both scored to help North Bay to seal the shootout victory – and another three points in the standings for Ontario.

Both teams battle for Esso Cup points again Tuesday, April 23, with North Bay facing off against the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) at 4 p.m. PT and Regina taking on host team the Fraser Valley Phantom at 7:30 p.m. PT inside the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.
