2013 Esso Cup

Fraser Valley Phantom (HST) 1 - LHFDQ Nord (QUE) 5

LHFDQ Nord beats Fraser Valley 5-1 for Quebec team’s first win at 2013 Esso Cup

by Michelle Candusso

Burnaby, B.C. – The LHFDQ Nord (Quebec) battled — and conquered – the Fraser Valley Phantom on Monday night, topping the host team 5-1 in front of their local fans inside Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

As soon as the whistle blew, the game was off to a chaotic start, with a back and forth battle on the ice. That was until Tammy-Lee Corbeil (Mirabel, Que.) took advantage of a Fraser Valley defensive breakdown to score the first goal of the game for LHFDQ Nord at 6:46 in the opening frame, with the assist going to Katia Boulianne (St-Eustache, Que.)

It seemed LHFDQ Nord had gained the momentum they needed to dominate the second half of the period, but Fraser Valley’s Samantha Schwarz (Abbotsford, B.C.) interrupted that thought. Fraser Valley caught a break as goalie Laticia Castillo (Surrey, B.C.) made a magnificent save, which sparked a breakaway by Schwarz. She scored a short-handed goal assisted by Mackenzie Wong (Surrey, B.C.)  at 12:26 in the period during a two-on-one confrontation for the equalizer.

LHFDQ Nord responded during their fourth power-play, when Jade Downie-Landry (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.) took a slap shot in the offensive zone and Eve-Audrey Picard (Longueuil, Que.) picked up the rebound at 15:45 in the first to help the Quebec reps take the lead once again. LHFDQ Nord remained strong, and Fraser Valley continued to fight back, as the first period came to a close with a 2-1 score.

The second period started with tremendous enthusiasm and equally exciting opportunities generated from both sides.  LHFDQ Nord’s defence played superbly, killing yet another penalty which allowed them to maintain control of the puck. With LHFDQ’s sharp passes and swift plays, Picard managed to sneak one into the back of the Fraser Valley net midway through the middle frame to make it a 3-1 lead.

Fraser Valley racked up penalties with a total of 11 throughout the game, and LHFDQ made sure the Phantom faced the consequences. During a five-on-three power-play, Alyson Matteau (Blainville, Que.) solidified a three-goal lead with a shot just inside the blue line. As the period came to an end, tensions grew and both teams played a little more aggressively. Fraser Valley wasn’t going down without a fight.

In the third period, the confident LHFDQ Nord were up against more resilient Fraser Valley team. An error in a line change caused a scare for LHFDQ Nord, but a great save by Valerie Lamenta (Montreal, Que.) helped keep up their confidence on the ice. Shortly after that, Audrey Belzile (St-Hyacinthe, Que.) nailed the top corner of the Fraser Valley net with a wicked backhand, for the 5-1 final and a first triumph for the Quebec team at the 2013 Esso Cup.

In the third period alone, LHFDQ Nord took five penalties and Fraser Valley took six, making for a dramatic conclusion to the game, including Danae Guay (Beloeil, Que.) being sent off the ice.

Following the game, Picard said that “staying in control of yourself” is how she managed to deal with the aggressive play, and stayed focused on the goal of winning the game.

When asked what they can take with them into the next game, Quebec head Coach Valerie Bois said “teamwork.”  That strategy certainly proved successful in Monday night’s feature game.
LHFDQ Nord play their next game against Halifax Metro Boston Pizza (Atlantic) at 12 p.m. PT on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, while Fraser Valley faces off against the Regina Rebels at 7:30 p.m. PT.
