“Ghost” Writing:
A blog by 2013 Esso Cup host team the Fraser Valley Phantom

by Mackenzie Wong (#5)

It has been a long journey for us to get to where we are. It’s the night before playoffs, and I know that my team is ready to go.

We have been through the ups and the downs as a team. Countless times, we have climbed up the stairs and down the stairs at the Langley Events Centre arena. At practice, we have gone down in push-up position and up into squats. We have lifted up weights in the gym and have run five kilometres down the streets of Langley. We saw Kelowna light up when Gaby scored bar down.  We have opened up and shared our most embarrassing moments with coach, and have watched the Grinch steal Christmas on the bus down to Kootenay.

I feel confident and excited for our first playoff game. I love the intensity that comes with playoff hockey. The three game series leaves little room for error, and every shift must be the best shift of the season. Giving everything we have into each game is the key to success. The team that wants the win more will come out on top. Every goal is cherished and each one brings us one step closer to our ultimate goal, the 2013 Esso Cup.   The National Female Midget Championship seems so far away, yet it is right around the corner.

Being the host of the Esso Cup this year is a great privilege and responsibility. We are blessed to have the chance to show Canada what we are capable of. Yet, having the spotlight on us adds some extra pressure. There is added pressure coming from friends and family, who will come out to watch us play with high expectations. There is pressure coming from coaches, and from ourselves to perform at our peaks. But, my team is ready to embrace this upcoming challenge. We stay focused by going one step at a time, from playoffs to when the puck drops in Burnaby for the Esso Cup.

About “Ghost” Writing: Leading up to and during the 2013 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, coming to Burnaby, B.C., this April, several players on the Fraser Valley Phantom of the BC Hockey Female Midget AAA League, will be contributing their thoughts to “Ghost Writing,” a blog about hosting the Esso Cup and everything else female hockey.
