2010 Esso Cup

Remparts du Richelieu  3 -  Notre Dame Hounds  5

REGINA, Sask. – Western representatives the Notre Dame Hounds opened and closed the scoring Monday inside the Co-operators Centre, with another trio of goals sandwiched in between, to make the final score 5-3 in their favour, with the Remparts du Richelieu from Quebec falling short for the second time in as many days.

Brooke Wilgosh (Regina, Sask.) kicked off the action by taking advantage of a power play, putting the puck into the Richelieu mesh on assists from Gabriela Stewart (Mississauga, Ont.) and Erica Williams (Weyburn, Sask.) at 7:21 in the first. Olivia Howe (Moose Jaw, Sask.) quickly followed suit, accepting a quick pass out front from Meagan Vestby (Sawn River, Man.) and slipping it past netminder Maude Byrns-Handfield (Longueuil, Que.).

But the Remparts didn’t let Notre Dame go back into their dressing room with too much confidence, capitalizing on their own power play when Valerie St-Onge (Brossard, Que.) accepted a pass from Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, Que.) and put it over the goal line to make it 2-1 going into the intermission.

Despite taking a penalty early in the second, the Hounds continued their offensive momentum and Vestby was on her game, as she skilfully skated into the slot and deked out Byrns-Handfield to make it 3-0 while her team was shorthanded.  Julia Flinton made it 4-1 at 8:54 in the second with a well-timed shot from the point.

But the Remparts weren’t going to give up that easily, returning to the ice in the third ready to make a comeback. Veronique Lortie (Carignan, Que.) had the crowd at the arena roaring when she made it 4-2 at 4:45 in the third, with Quebec fans gripping their seats when Jessica Livernois (La Prairie, Que.) narrowed the gap even further at 12:29 for a 4-3 score late in the game.

The Hounds, however, had other plans in mind. Brienna Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) wrote the last sentence of the story starring the Remparts and Hounds when she capped off the score at 5-3 for Notre Dame with less than five minutes left in the game. Bannon was named Player of the Game for the team from Quebec, while Vestby won that title for the Western squad.
