TROJANS SHUT OUT MACS AT TELUS CUP
JASON LA ROSE
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Tanner Martin finished with 18 saves and Jayden Wiens scored both goals, sending the Tisdale Trojans to a 2-0 win over the Halifax Macs on Wednesday afternoon at the 2019 TELUS Cup.
It’s the second win in a row for the Trojans and leaves them alone in second place with four points, although Toronto could pull even with a victory over Thunder Bay in the late game.
Martin wasn’t busy but was there when called upon, especially in a one-goal game in the third period, when the Macs pushed for the equalizer with help from a pair of power plays.
Both goaltenders were perfect in the first period – Martin stopped all three shots sent his way, while Halifax counterpart Liam Oxner went seven-for-seven.
The Trojans found the scoreboard early in the second on the power play; Mackenzie Carson carried deep down the right wing before finding Wiens trailing up the middle, and his quick shot beat Oxner for a 1-0 lead.
That would be it for scoring until the final minute despite multiple man-advantage opportunities for both teams; the Trojans were 1-for-6, while the Macs went goalless on six opportunities.
Oxner – who was absolutely spectacular in the Halifax goal – went to the bench in the final minute, and Wiens found the empty net with 30.4 seconds remaining to secure the two points for the West champions.
Tisdale will look to wrap up a semifinal spot Thursday when it takes on the Calgary Buffaloes (12 p.m. ET), while the Macs will try and bounce back against the host Thunder Bay Kings (7:30 p.m. ET).
