2013 TELUS Cup

Red Deer Chiefs 8 - Valley Wildcats 1

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Jody Sick scored twice and added an assist, one of three Red Deer Chiefs with three points, as the Pacific Region champions hammered the Valley Wildcats 8-1 on Thursday afternoon at the 2013 TELUS Cup.

The win temporarily moves the Chiefs to first place, depending on the outcomes of Thursday’s other games.

Jacob Schofield and Jordie Lawson each had a goal and two assists for Red Deer (2-1-1), which also got goals from Dustin Gorgi, Colton Bobyk, Kaleb Denham and Rory Davidson in the victory.

Gorgi, Bobyk and Davidson each finished with a goal and an assist.

John Deacon scored the lone goal for Valley (0-4), who were eliminated from semifinal contention with the loss. It’s the third consecutive year the Atlantic Region champion has failed to reach the final four.

Sick got the scoring started just 3:45 in, banging in the rebound of a shot from Lawson, but Deacon found a loose puck in the Red Deer crease to bring the Wildcats even 10 minutes later.

The Chiefs got the lead for good with 3.3 seconds left in the first period on Sick’s second goal of the opening frame, the first of seven straight goals for the side from Central Alberta.

Schofield doubled the lead early in the second period, and although Valley kept it close for much of the middle frame, goals from Gorgi, Bobyk and Denham in a span of 92 seconds late in the period made it a 6-1 game after 40 minutes.

Lawson and Davidson added goals in the last half of the third period to round out the scoring.

Matt Zentner got the win in the Red Deer goal, making 18 saves, while Michael Pettet and Justin Ritcey shared the goaltending duties for Valley; Pettet stopped 21 of 27 in the first 40 minutes before giving way to Ritcey, who allowed two goals on 15 shots.

The Chiefs close out the preliminary round against the Ottawa Jr. 67’s in an early Friday morning start (9:30 a.m. ET), while the Wildcats finish their tournament against the Saskatoon Contacts (1 p.m. ET).
