2012 TELUS Cup

Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin 5 - Leduc Oil Kings 4

DAUPHIN, AUDETTE LEAD PHÉNIX TO WIN OVER OIL KINGS AND FIRST PLACE

LEDUC, Alta. – Laurent Dauphin scored a hat trick and Daniel Audette added five assists as the Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin claimed first place in the preliminary round at the 2012 TELUS Cup thanks to a 5-4 win over the host Leduc Oil Kings on Friday night.

The Phénix victory means it will face the Oil Kings in a rematch in Saturday’s late semifinal (6 p.m. MT), while the Red Deer Rebels and Saskatoon Contacts will meet in the early game (2 p.m. MT).

With the game tied 3-3 after two periods thanks to a wild Leduc comeback in the closing minutes of the middle frame, Dauphin scored his second of the game 2:55 into the third period and finished off his hat trick less than five minutes later to help Collège Esther-Blondin (4-0-1) wrap up an undefeated preliminary round.

Tristan Tremblay and David Bergeron had the other goals for the Phénix, while Dominic Talbot-Tassi and Frédérik Gauthier chipped in with two assists each.

Dauphin and Audette finished the preliminary round tied with 13 points each, although Dauphin earned the tournament’s Top Scorer award thanks to his goal-scoring prowess – he finished with nine, compared to three for Audette.

Cole MacDonald, Robert Cain and Jarrett Brown scored in a span of 3:15 late in the second to erase a 3-0 deficit heading into the second intermission, but the Oil Kings were handed their third loss in a row after opening the tournament with back-to-back wins.

Kord Pankewicz had the other goal for Leduc, which is just the second host team in the last five years to qualify for the weekend at the National Midget Championship. The last host team to play for the gold medal was Red Deer in 2007, the last time the tournament was hosted in Alberta.
