2011 TELUS Cup

Vancouver NW Giants 6 - Halifax Titans 1

DYNAMIC DUO STARS AGAIN AS GIANTS BEAT TITANS

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Alex Kerfoot had a hat trick and added two assists and Sam Reinhart finished with a goal and three helpers as the Vancouver North West Giants continued their offensive roll through the 2011TELUS Cup, beating the Halifax Titans 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Mile One Centre.

Through two games Kerfoot (five goals, eight assists) and Reinhart (four goals, nine assists) sit tied atop the tournament scoring chart with 13 points in two games, a remarkable pace at any level, let alone a national championship.

After scoring four times in the first 10 minutes and six times in the first period of their win overWinnipeg on Monday, the Giants (2-0) managed just a single goal in the opening frame against Halifax (1-1), a power play marker off the stick of Reinhart.

But the floodgates opened in period two, thanks in large part to Vancouver’s play with the man advantage. Kerfoot and Cam Marks scored power play goals in the second period, sandwiched between even-strength markers from Kerfoot and Sean Lan, sending the Giants to the dressing room up 5-0 after 40 minutes.

Alex MacNeil ruined the shutout bid of Daniel Cotton early in the third period before Kerfoot finished off his hat trick on a beautiful feed from Reinhart, capping the scoring.

The Giants are the first team to win their first two games by at least five goals since the Prince Albert Mintos in 2006, who won the gold medal, and they’re the first B.C. team to start 2-0 at the National MidgetChampionship since the Burnaby Winter Club in 1982 – the team that won the province’s lone national title.

Vancouver will try to run its record to 3-0 on Wednesday when it meets the host St. John’s Privateers (7p.m. NT), while the Titans will take on the Lions du Lac St-Louis in the day’s matinee (noon NT).
