PREVIEW: The Prince Albert Mintos had perhaps the most impressive round robin, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record. Heading into the playoffs with a staggering 26 goals for and just 6 goals against, Prince Albert’s Matthew Robertson proved he is among the countries top young players. Contributing 5 goals and 5 assists in just 5 round robin games, and named the tournaments top forward, the assistant captain is the brain behind a well-organized offense.

The Mintos will be lead into the semi-final by captain Ron Meyers, who scored 7 total points in the first round, good enough for third highest scorer for Prince Albert.

If Robertson is the brain of the Mintos, Defenseman Tommy Brown is the heart. Brown was the highest scoring defenseman of the opening round, with 3 goals and 6 assists.

Saturdays first semi-final game is shaping up to be a David and Goliath encounter, but we all know what happened with those two.

Patriotes de Chateauguay just squeaked by the St. John’s Maple Leafs with a 2-3 record for a chance to upset the giants.

Unlike Prince Albert, who has 7 players among the tourney’s top 20 scorers, Chateauguay looked for the offensive talents of Simon-Yves Lazure, the lone Quebec point-getter in the top 20, with 1 goal and 4 assists in 5 games.

But Patriotes round robin goal scorers Joel Champagne and Alexandre Leduc will help provide the offense, shouldering the burden of breaking through a tight Prince Albert defense.

Big defenseman Yann Sauve, ranked first overall by QMJHL scouting, will anchor Chateauguay’s defense and likely be the busiest player on the ice. Saturday’s game will be a good test for the 16 year-old, who will want to show the “Q” why he’s #1.

The Patriotes will have to play more disciplined hockey if they want to have a chance for the finals. Chateauguay logged the most penalty minutes in the round robin with 225 in just 5 games.
