2005 RBC Cup

 Central 1 Pacific 2

Preliminary Round
May 12, 2005
Weyburn, SK

The Camrose Kodiaks beat the Georgetown Raiders in a 2-1 at the Royal Bank Cup Thursday – not that it really mattered.

The Kodiaks and the Raiders knew that they would be facing each other in the RBC semifinals on Saturday no matter who won Thursday, which rendered the qualifying round match between the two squads meaningless.

All that was decided Thursday afternoon was that Camrose will wear their white jerseys and sit on the home bench on Saturday.

Both teams rested key players. The Kodiaks scratched two-thirds of their top line, sitting Mason Raymond and Chance Olsen. Camrose captain Travis Friedley, who leads all tournament defensemen in scoring, also sat. The Raiders rested leading scorer Kevin Harvey and captain John Wheaton, among others.

Both teams also started their backup goaltenders for the first time in the tourney, with Kirk Irving of Camrose and Chris Hyk of Georgetown getting the nod.

The fact that the game meant little was reflected in the relaxed pace of play in the opening period. Camrose outshot Georgetown 14-5 in the scoreless frame.

Camrose started buzzing around the Georgetown net early in the second when the Raiders got in some penalty trouble. But Hyk kept it scoreless with two nice saves on one-timers from the point by Kodiaks defenseman TJ Fast.

The Raiders broke the deadlock at 6:13 on a power play of their own, when Charles Amodeo pounced on a Tyson Gimblett rebound and put it by Irving.

Hyk kept the Kodiaks off the board well into the third period, but shortly after he stoned defenseman Todd Steil during a Camrose power play, Scott Dafoe scored to tie the game. Moments later, Lee Jubinville just missed putting the Kodiaks ahead when he shot high on the breakaway.

With overtime looming, Dafoe sprung Steil on a breakaway, and the Camrose rearguard made good, wristing a shot over Hyk’s blocker as the Raiders goalie lunged forward to poke check.

Kodiaks goaltender Irving preserved the win, gloving a Joseph Piccone shot from point-blank range as time expired.

Players of the game were Todd Steil of the Kodiaks and Chris Hyk of the Raiders.

The winner of tonight’s match between the Portage Terriers (1-2) and the Hawkesbury Hawks (0-3) will face the top seed, the host Weyburn Red Wings, in the other semifinal.
