ONTARIO 4 ATLANTIC 5 - BRONZE MEDAL

It was the final game for Team Ontario and Team Atlantic as they competed for the Bronze medal at the Enmax Centre. Atlantic opened up the scoring when Blake Gallagher scored his sixth goal of the tournament. James Sheppard continued his domination in the tournament as he scored the second goal for Atlantic. With under a minute to go in the first, Ryan McDonough scored for Ontario, cutting the lead in half. In the second period, Atlantic added to their lead when Andrew White scored his team’s third goal. The lead did not last long, as Myles Applebaum scored two goals to tie the game at three. In the third, Atlantic regained the lead when Blake Gallagher scored his second of the game. James McGinn of Ontario tied up the game again with a goal that set up a very exciting final ten minutes. With 2:41 left in the game Ryan Hillier received his souvenir from the tournament, the game winning goal. The win for Team Atlantic gave them their first medal in the World Under-17 Hockey Championship tournament. The player of the game for Team Ontario was Myles Applebaum. Andrew White received the player of the game for Team Atlantic.

PACIFIC 1 WEST 3 - GOLD MEDAL

The gold medal game at the Enmax Centre proved to be the battle of the tournament’s two best teams. Team West and Team Pacific were evenly matched as they kept each other scoreless after 20 minutes. The only exception was the shots-on-goal differential as West considerably outshot Pacific. The story of the first period was Pacific net minder Leland Irving, who turned aside 16 shots in the frame. In the second period, West continued to pepper Irving with shots until forward Kyle Bortis was able to squeeze one past him. West led 1-0 until Pacific retaliated shortly thereafter. JP Szaszkiewicz stuffed the puck into the West net to tie the game 1-1. Pacific was only able to muster 4 shots on net in the second period, matching their first period shot total. Pacific’s 8 shots on net was 21 shots fewer than West’s two period shot total. There was no scoring in the third period until Jonathan Toews scored a big goal 6:54 into the final frame to put West up 3-1. West completely shut down Pacific’s third period drive, and drove the nail into the coffin when Toews scored with 13 seconds left in the game. Team West won the game 2-1 and won the gold medal! It is West’s first ever gold medal in the Under-17 hockey championships. Team Pacific was awarded the silver medal and a second place finish. Kyle Bortis was the player of the game for the West. Leiland Irving was the undisputed player of the game for Pacific, as he stopped 40 shots on the evening.

QUEBEC 8 GERMANY 3

Robert Bote opened the scoring for Team Germany when he snuck one by Team Quebec goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Michael Dubuc responded for Quebec shelfing a dandy wrist shot in the top corner, to tie the game at 1-1. Alexandre Monahan capitalized on a juicy rebound, to put his team up 2-1 before the end of the first frame. Francois Bouchard scored Quebec’s third goal on the power play which gave them a two goal lead. That was until German forward Bruce Becker scored on his team’s power play opportunity, pulling Germany to within one. Peter-James Corsi bulged the twine late in the second period to give Quebec the lead after 40 minutes of play. Patrick Hagar gave Germany their third goal of the game early in the third period, but goals from Alexandre Monahan, Pascal Boutin, Jason Legault, of Quebec put the contest out of reach. Quebec came out on top by a score of 8-3. Quebec’s win gives them a 9th place finish in the tournament standings. Germany’s loss drops them to a 10th place in the tournament. Germany’s player of the game was Bruce Becker. Quebec’s player of the game was Alexandre Monahan who recorded a hat-trick.

CZECH REPUBLIC 7 SLOVAKIA 2

Team Czech Republic and Team Slovakia squared off in an emotional game Monday, at the Nicholas Sheran Arena. After a scoreless first period the teams finally found the magic touch in the second. Jiri Tlusty scored two goals while David Stieler scored another for Team Czech Republic. The lone goal scorer for Team Slovakia was Lukas Maslonka. In the third period Martin Latal scored his first and second of the tournament which added to the total and finished the game 7-2. Team Czech Republic finished the tournament in seventh place while Team Slovakia dropped to eighth. Michal Kazatel was the player of the game for Team Czech Republic. Stefan Klimek was the player of the game for Team Slovakia. The true spirit of the tournament was evident after the game as a handful of players came together after the game trading pats on the head and sharing words of encouragement.

FINLAND 2 UNITED STATES 9

USA forward Rhett Rakhishani was the story in the first period. His 2 goals which followed American Erik Johnson’s goal early in the first, paced the United States to a 3-2 lead after twenty minutes. Finnish goaltender Mika Jarvinen was called upon to replace Niko Hovinen early in the second period; however he succumbed to the same fate as his predecessor. Jarvinen let in three goals in twenty minutes as well. Steve Sperry, Patrick Kane, and Chad Morin lit the lamp for the Americans in the second. USA lead the game 6-2 after 2 periods. In the third period, James O’Brien, Chris Atkinson, Blake Geoffrion all had goals to put the United States up 9-2. Antti Reivonen and Jusso Antonen were the Finnish goal scorers on the evening. The loss drops Finland to 6th place in the tournament standings. The win elevates USA to 5th place in the tournament. Joonas Lehtivuori was the player of the game for Finland. The player of the game for USA was James O’Brien.

ONTARIO 1 PACIFIC 9

Four different goal scorers in the first period was enough to give Team Pacific a respectable lead early in the hockey game. Mitch Fadden, JP Szaskiewicz, Ben Maxwell, and Brady Calla were the four Pacific snipers. Cory Emmerton was the only one who connected for Team Ontario in the first twenty minutes. The period ended in a 4-1 lead for Pacific. Jordan Baker, Matthew Cline, and Tyler Swystun added to the lead by putting three more goals on the board to give Pacific a 7-1 lead after two periods. Tyler Swystun scored his second goal of the evening, and Travis Novak added another to put the game out of reach at a score of 9-1. The player of the game for Pacific was Jesse Dudas. Cory Emmerton was the player of the game for Ontario. The loss drops Ontario out of gold and silver medal contention. They will now compete in the bronze medal game tomorrow afternoon at the Enmax Centre. The victory gives Pacific the opportunity to challenge for the gold medal tomorrow evening at the Enmax Centre.

ATLANTIC 3 WEST 7

Team West squared up against Team Atlantic, in front of a sold out crowd at the Nicholas Sheran Arena. Both teams showed little nervousness, as they both came out firing in the first period of this semi-final game. Blair Macauley opened the scoring for Team Atlantic on an early shorthanded goal. With 7:36 left, the game was tied up when Kirt Hill scored a power play goal for Team West. One of the best periods in the tournament went down in the second as both teams came out physical. Team Atlantic went into the lead as Blake Gallager found the top corner on a quick backhand. Ian Duval tied the game when he found a gift lying in the crease and poked it in for his third of the tournament. Team West leader, Jonathan Toews put his team back in front as he slipped on past Team Atlantic goalie Roger Kennedy. Ryan White closed out the second period when his top shelf goal found the back of the twine. Fans were on the edge of their seats in the third period as Team Atlantic cut the two goal lead to one when Blake Gallagher scored his second of the game. However; Team West proved to be too much for Team Atlantic as they added three more goals to end the game. One of the goals came from Ryan White and Kyle Bortis had the other two. The player of the game for Team West was Ryan White with 2 goals and 2 assists. The player of the game for Team Atlantic was Jonathon Harty. Team West will face Team Pacific tomorrow in the gold medal.

WEST 2 UNITED STATES 3

With first place in their division wrapped up, Team West looked to work on fundamentals and play the role of spoiler against Team USA. Team USA looked to get past a heartbreaking loss yesterday against Team Ontario. Team USA showed the loss did not phase them as they came out strong scoring the first goal of the game by Chris Summers. In the second period, Jonathan Toews continued his strong performance in the tournament when his wrist shot found the top corner. Team USA regained the lead when Ryan Flynn scored his second goal of the tournament. In a back and forth game Team West tied the game up again, with a goal by Kirk Hill in the third period. Team USA went in front again when Bill Sweatt scored a beauty passed Ryan Nieszner. Team USA was able to hold on for the win thanks to a late penalty by Team West. The player of the Game for Team West was Kirt Hill. The player of the game for Team USA was Ryan Flynn. Team West finished the Round Robin 3-1-0 and has advanced to the semi-finals. Team USA finished the Round Robin 2-1-1 and will wait to see if they advance to semi-finals tomorrow.

ATLANTIQUE 5 FINLAND 0

Team Atlantic captain James Sheppard has taken the expression ‘leading by example’ to a new level. Sheppard was the only scorer in the first period, as he fired 2 goals past Finnish goaltender Mika Jarvinen. Jarvinen shut the door in the second period however, not allowing anything past him over the 20 minutes. Roger Kennedy was more than equal to the task. Atlantic’s net minder did not allow any of the 16 shots on goal to get past him over the first 2 periods. Brad Marchand put Atlantic up 3-0 when he fired a laser over the glove hand of Jarvinen. Marchand recorded his second point in the game when he assisted on James Sheppard’s third goal, which put Atlantic up 4-0. The hat trick helped put Sheppard right in the midst of the tournament scoring race. Brad Marchand snuck one last goal in before the end of the game, giving him 3 points on the evening and a 5-0 victory for his Atlantic teammates. With the win, Atlantic’s record improves to 3-1-0. The 6 points gives Atlantic enough points for a first place tie in Pool B, however they suffered a loss to Team Pacific on January 1st. As a result Team Pacific’s New Year’s Day victory over Atlantic gives them the first place finish. Team Atlantic will settle for second place. Finland’s loss will limit them to a third place finish in the pool. Timo Rinne was the player of the game for Finland. James Sheppard was the player of the game for Atlantic. Roger Kennedy stopped 27 shots for the shut-out.

SLOVAKIA vs ONTARIO

Team Ontario knew that with a win they would advance to the semi-finals. This motivation proved to be a benefit as Team West scored five goals in the first period which included a hat trick by birthday boy Ryan McDonough, who turned seventeen today. In the second period the goal scoring show continued as Aaron Snow scored two and Mathew Leahey added another. Both teams gave the score board a rest as no goals were scored in the third period. Team Ontario finishes 3-1-0 and advances to the semi-finals against Team Pacific tomorrow. Team Slovakia finishes the round robin tournament 1-2-1 and will play Team Czech Republic for seventh place. The player of the game for Team Slovakia was Branislav Rehus. Ryan Mcdonough received another birthday gift as he was player of the game for Team Ontario. Goalie Jason Guy stopped 34 shots to record the goose egg.

CZECH REPUBLIC vs QUÉBEC

Team Czech Republic was flying out of the gate, scoring 2 goals in the first five minutes of the contest. Team Quebec’s Stefan Chaput scored 2 goals late in the first period, but it was only enough to tie the contest 3-3 after twenty minutes. Marek Polak and Jiri Krejci added 2 more goals for the Czechs, putting the score at 5-3 after the second period. Czech goalie Michal Neuwirth turned aside 26 shots over two periods. Ivo Mocek scored the 6th goal of the game for the Czech Republic, which gave his team a commanding lead until late in the contest. Peter-James Corsi scored for Quebec to bring the score to 6-4. Stefan Chaput then added another for Quebec, which coincidentally was his hat trick goal on the evening. Quebec was now only down by 1. However Marek Polak of the Czech Republic dashed any hope Quebec had of tying the game, when he scored the team’s 7th goal with under 2 minutes remaining. Quebec called a time out with a little over a minute remaining in the game, but it was to no avail. The Czech’s hung on to the lead, finishing the game with a 7-5 score. The win improves the Czech’s record to 1-2-1, giving them a 4th place finish in Pool B standings. Team Quebec’s record drops to 0-4-0, giving them a 5th place finish in Pool B standings. Michael Dubuc was named Quebec’s player of the game. Jan Semorad was the player of the game for the Czech Republic.

ONTARIO 7 UNITED STATES 5

It looked like it was going to be all Team USA, when they started 2005 off with a bang, scoring four goals in the first period. Goals came from Jamie McBain, Bill Sweatt, Blake Geoffrion and Ryan Flynn. Team Ontario showed they still had life when Aaron Snow scored late in the period. In the second period Justin Azevedo cut the USA lead in half, when his goal found the top shelf. Team USA regained their three point lead when Chris Summers sneaked one threw the five hole on Team Ontario Goalie, Jason Guy. Cory Emmerton was again able to bring the game closer as he scored a shorthanded goal to close out the second period. The third period was all Team Ontario as they scored four unanswered goals. Cory Emmerton buried his second of the game, while Jordan Stall scored two, one included an empty net goal. The biggest goal came with 22 seconds left in the game when James McGinn silenced the USA fans and scored the game winner. The players of the game were Brian Strait for Team USA and Jason Guy for Team Ontario.

PACIFIC 5 ATLANTIC 2

A boisterous crowd at the Enmax Centre on New Year’s Day added to the electricity on the ice, as both teams came out firing early in the contest. Patrick O’Keefe scored on a point shot to give Team Atlantic a 1-0 lead. Team Pacific quickly retaliated when Ben Maxwell snuck in a nifty wrap-around goal to tie it up 1-1. Atlantic reclaimed the lead early in the second when Robert Slaney’s shot found the back of the net. Pacific did not sit idle, as forward Zach Hamill scored two unanswered goals to give his team a 3-2 lead before the end of the second period. In the third, Jesse Dudas recorded his tournament leading 6th assist when he assisted on Robert Skinner’s goal early in the frame. Pacific then added another marker for his team when Tyler Swystun scored the club’s 5th goal to give the team a 5-2 lead. Pacific held onto the lead to establish the win. Pacific’s record improves to 2-0-2. Atlantic’s record drops to 2-1-0. Philadelphia Flyers’ head coach Ken Hitchcock presented the players of the game. Brad Marchand was the player of the game for Atlantic. Brady Calla was the player of the game for Pacific.

QUEBEC 3 FINLAND 6

Team Quebec dominated Finland in the first period which was evidenced by Quebec’s 20 shots on goal, to Finland’s 6. Despite the high number of shots taken, Quebec’s Benjamin Breault scored the only goal for his club in the period. It was goaltender Niko Hovinen who kept his team in the game after the first twenty minutes of play. His Finnish teammate, Jan-Mikael Juutilainen capitalized on a power-play opportunity to tie the game 1-1. Finland changed their tone drastically in the second period, scoring 4 goals within ten minutes. Francois Bouchard picked up his second point on the night when he assisted on Hugo Carpentier’s lone Quebec goal in the period. The frame ended with Finland in the lead with a score of 5-2. The third period saw Quebec and Finland score 1 goal each, to conclude the game with a final score of 6-3, and a victory for Finland. Finland’s record improves to 2-0-1 with the win on the evening. Quebec’s record drops to 0-3-0. Finnish forwards Timo Rinne and Jan-Mikael Juutilainen had a strong game, gathering 4 and 5 points respectively. Niko Hovinen made 42 saves for the win.

GERMANY 2 WESTERN 7

Team West looked to go 3-0 in the tournament as they played winless Team Germany in front of a pro Team West crowd at the Nicholas Sheran Arena. Team West came out flying as Jordan Knackstedt split the German defense and opened the scoring. Team Germany was equal to the task as Patrick Hager split the Team West defense and tied the game at one. Team West came right back to take the lead, when Kyle Bortis scored two quick goals past Benjamin Dirksen. The domination continued for Team West in the second period, as three goals were scored. First, by Logan Pyett, followed by Ian Duval, and Jonathan Toews. Team Germany was able to sneak one in at the end of the second when Marcel Muller went five hole on Kevin Armstrong. One more goal was scored in the third when Logan Pyett scored on a deflection. Shots on goal for the game were 50-20 for Team West. The player of the game for Team Germany was Marcel Muller. For Team West the player of the game was captain Jonathan Toews, who now has 4 goals and 2 assists in the tournament.

QUÉBEC 2 ATLANTIC 5

Team Quebec goaltender Jonathan Bernier and Team Atlantic goaltender Roger Kennedy both stopped 9 shots each, to keep the game scoreless after the first period. Francois Bouchard and Peter-James Corsi both added a goal, to put Quebec up 2-0 in the second. That was until Atlantic’s forward Brad Marchand added a goal for his team late in the period to put the east coast kids within 1. Robert Slaney of Atlantic then tied the game when he connected 3:57 into the third period. To the delight of the many parents and fans of Team Atlantic in attendance, Blake Gallagher fired a shot past Jonathan Bernier to take a 3-2 lead in the game. Quebec coach Martin Daoust called a time-out half way through the third, but it was to no avail as Atlantic padded their lead when Ryan Hillier lit the lamp to put the score at 4-2. Brad Marchand added an empty net goal to give Atlantic the win with a final score of 5-2. Forwards Marchand and Robert Slaney recorded two points in the afternoon game for Atlantic. Peter-James Corsi recorded 2 points and was named player of the game for Quebec. Andrew Bodnarchuk was the Atlantic player of the game.

ONTARIO 3 WEST 4

It was an all Canadian audience at the Nicholas Sheran Arena, as both Team West and Team Ontario tried to go 2-0 in the tournament. This game was anticipated to be very physical and exciting and it did not disappoint. The game produced a handful of huge hits, which was a real highlight to a fast paced game. Most of the first period was dominated by Team West only to be overshadowed by an early goal by Myles Applebaum from Team Ontario. In the second period the fans for Team West erupted when Blair Macauley tied the game at one. Only, to be later silenced, when Ryan Applebaum scored his second goal of the game for Team Ontario. The goal scoring continued in the third as Jonathan Towes scored twice giving the lead to Team West. Team Ontario tied the game at three when Ryan McDonough found the back of the net on a deflection. The most important goal came with under five minutes left in the third, when player of the game for Team West, Brennan Zastko scored the game winner. Steven Ferry was the player of the game for Team Ontario.

SLOVAKIA 4 GERMANY 0

Both Team Germany and Team Slovakia looked to end 2004 on a positive note as they each played their third game of the tournament at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Team Slovakia owned Team Germany in the first period out shooting them 11-3 and scoring two goals, one by Julius Sinkovic and the other by Marek Biro. Team Slovakia continued to dominate Team Germany, scoring one in the second by Tomas Brcko and closing the game with one more in the third by Ratislav Konecny. Team Slovakia goalie, Marek Simko stopped 22 shots to record the first shutout of the tournament. Players of the game were Kyle Bortis for Team Germany and Lukas Zeliska for Team Slovakia. Team Germany will need a stronger effort tomorrow if they are to have a chance against Team West. Team Slovakia will get a well deserved rest as they have the day off.

CZECH REPUBLIC 2 PACIFIC 2

Team Pacific set the tone early when Mitch Fadden scored only 39 seconds into the game. The Czech Republic quickly revoked the lead when David Stieler capitalized on a power play opportunity to tie it up 1-1. Zbynek Hampl put the Czechs up 2-1 late in the first period silencing the pro-Pacific crowd at the Enmax Centre. Pacific drew even when forward Brady Calla scored on the power play to tie the game 2-2. There was no scoring in the third period despite a critical penalty taken by the Czech Republic with little time left in the game. The 2-2 draw gave the Czech’s their first point in the tournament, and improved their record to 0-2-1. Pacific’s record now stands at 1-0-2.

ATLANTIC 7 CZECH REPUBLIC 2

Team Atlantic’s enthusiastic response to their goals has seemed to rub off on the pro-Canada crowd at the Enmax Centre. The team is looking to establish a new goal scoring tradition, as the player who scores leaps into the waiting arms of his fellow teammates near the middle of the player’s bench. That enthusiasm rubbed off on the team as well. Team Atlantic scored 6 straight power play goals, giving them a 7-2 victory and their first win in round robin play. The Czech Republic suffered their second loss in as many days and is still searching for their first point of the tournament. Blake Gallagher and James Sheppard of Team Atlantic each collected 3 points. Jiri Tlusty was the player of the game for the Czech Republic. Gallagher was the player of the game for Team Atlantic.

WEST 4 SLOVAKIA 1

Although, the weather outside proved to be cold, inside the Nicholas Sheran Arena things were heating up. A packed crowd gathered to see Team Slovakia play Team West. though both teams had their chances, it was Team West that opened the scoring in the first period with a wrist shot from the slot by Blair Macauley (12). Captain Jonathan Toews (9) scored in the second, added by a backhand goal by winger Kirt Hill (19). In the third period, Team Slovakia got on the score board as Erik Calad (18), scored his third goal of the tournament on power play goal. Ian Duval (17), added one more for Team West to preserve a 4-1 victory. The player of the game for Team West was Jonathan Toews (9). Team Slovakia player of the game was Kristian Krajcik (6). The shots on goal were 43 for Team West and 22 for Team Slovakia.

GERMANY 1 UNITED STATES 5

The first period of the game was pretty evenly matched with the slight advantage going to Team USA, when speedy Rhett Rakhishani moved in from the red line, split the defense and scored giving Team USA an early lead. The second period was all Team USA, as four goals found that back of the twine. Forward Luke Popko scored two goals, while Michael Carmen and Kyle Okposo each scored one. With a minute left in the third period Robert Bote scored for Team Germany, ending the shutout for Team USA goalie Joseph Palmer. The player of the Game for Team USA was Rhett Rakhishani. Bruce Becker received the player of the game for Team Germany. Team USA is 1-0-1, while Team Germany falls to 0-2 in the tournament.

PACIFIC 7 FINLAND 7

Two power-play goals in the first period for Team Finland was enough to silence the Enmax Centre audience, as Team Pacific found themselves in a 2 goal deficit after 20 minutes. A third goal by the Finns early in the second period, caused Pacific’s head coach Bill Peters to call a sudden time out. The moment of reflection served well for the local favorites, as Pacific scored two quick goals to pull within one. The two teams traded goals back and forth for the remainder of the period to end the frame with a 5-3 lead for Finland. The game seemed to be out of reach as Finland built a 7-3 lead in the third period. Pacific mounted an impressive comeback to the delight of the Lethbridge audience however, scoring 4 straight goals to tie the game at 7. The final 5 minutes did not see any scoring, so both teams walked away with a tie. Finland and Pacific both leave the night’s contest with a 1-0-1 record. Honorable mention to Finland’s Juuso Puustinen, who recorded a hat-trick on the evening.

SLOVAKIA 2 vs USA 2

The Under 17 World Hockey Championship tournament opened up for Team Sloviakia and Team USA in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Nicholas Sheran Arena. Both teams came out strong playing with intensity. The game scoring was opened up at the 13:18 minute mark of a very physical 1st period, when USA forward James O'Brien (15) scored his first goal of the tournament. The first period ended 1-0 USA. It only took 58 seconds of the second period for this game to be tied at 1-1, with a quick shot by Erik Caladi (18). Erik Johnson (42) scored the second goal for Team USA, when his point shot found the back of the net pass goalie Marek Simko (25). In the third period the game was tied up again by Erik Caladi (18) who scored his second goal of the tournament on a 5 minute power play . The game ended with each team reciving a point in the tournament after a 2-2 draw. Next up for Team Slovakia will be Team West. As for Team USA they will face Team Germany tommorow.

FINLAND 4 vs CZECH REPUBLIC 1

In a game dominated by Finland, Martin Latal was one of the few bright lights for the Czech Republic. Named the Czech’s player of the game, Latal was granted an assist on the only goal his team was able to score in the contest. The Finns outplayed the Czechs as evidence by the shots on goal differential. The Czech’s 25 shots was no match for Finland’s 35. Nico Aaltonen, Juuso Antonen, Tomi Stahlhammar, Juuso Puustinen, and Ilkka Heikkila all recorded 2 points each in Finland’s first official victory in the tournament.

TEAM ONTARIO 6 vs GERMANY 1

Both Team Ontario and Team Germany, were looking to start the tournament off on the right note as they each played their first game of the tournament in front of a respectable crowd at the Nicholas Sheran Arena. The early momentum was gained when Justin Azevedo (20), opened the goal scoring on a shot that found the back of the net. His goal was followed with a beautiful top shelf goal by John Hughes (9). Two more goals followed in the second period including a five on three power play goal scored by Ryan McInerney (16). Germany was able to get on the score board in the third period on a power play goal scored by Marcel Muller (19). Muller's goal proved to be to little to late as Team Ontario held on for the win, finishing the game with two more by Jordan Stall (10) and Nathan Martine (5). Although the scoreboard showed a lopsided win for Team Ontario, both sides had their chances. Goalies Mark Packwood (30) for Team Ontario and Timo Pielmeier for Team Germany (30), made many huge saves in this game. Both teams will have to find ways to stay out of the penalty box if they are to look for future success in the tournament. The deserving players of the game were Justin Azevedo (20) for Team Ontario and Maximilian Brandi (12) for Team Germany.
