2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Switzerland 0 - United States 5

THE MOMENT: Switzerland @ United States – Friday, April 5

by Chris Kallan

OTTAWA, Ont. – It’s rare for a goaltender to surrender five goals and be the undisputed best player on the ice. But that happens a lot whenever Florence Schelling suits up for Switzerland.

Schelling stopped the first 18 shots sent her way, and made 56 saves overall – a few dozen of the spectacular variety – in a 5-0 loss to the mighty United States in preliminary round action Friday at SPB Arena. Many of the announced crowd of 5,626 “oohed” and “aahed” the feats of one of the finest goaltenders in the world.

Thwarting Amanda Kessel and Brianna Decker on a two-on-zero breakaway? No problem.
Stopping Jocelyne Lamoureux from close range with a brilliant glove save? Easy, peasy.
Monique Lamoureux in all alone? Get that stuff out of here!

These were some of the most potent forwards in the universe – world championships, Olympic medals, all-stars galore – not the gals from the local beer league.

Unattended.

With lots of time to choose a target.

Look, if you’ve never seen Schelling play before, put it on your bucket list. She’s well worth the price of admission.
