THE MOMENT: Sweden @ Germany – Wednesday, April 3
by Sarah Forgrave
NEPEAN, Ont. - In Pool B action Wednesday afternoon, Sweden faced off against Germany and claimed the victory in the first minute of the overtime period winning 3-2 on a goal by Pernilla Winberg.
The pivotal “moment” of the game took place just under a minute into overtime, when Sweden’s Winberg drove hard to the net, scoring on the backhand after a scramble in the crease left the German goalkeeper out of position.
Sweden, still reeling from its loss to the Czech Republic a day earlier, started out strong but soon saw itself facing a two-goal deficit against the German team in the first period. Despite the shortfall, Sweden responded with a goal late in the period to cut the lead to 2-1.
Midway through the third period saw the Swedes tie the game just moments after the German goaltender made a dramatic glove save. The comeback was complete 53 seconds into the overtime period, as Winberg went to the backhand and scored the exciting game-winner, making it “the moment” of the game.
