Canada 7 – Czech Republic 5

CANADA GETS WILD WIN OVER CZECHS IN PRE-HLINKA ACTION

JASON LA ROSE

BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Jérémy Roy (Richelieu, Que./Sherbrooke, QMJHL) scored the game-winning goal on a third-period power play to help Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team to a back-and-forth 7-5 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday.

The game was Canada’s lone pre-tournament contest before the puck drops Monday on the 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in Breclav and Piestany, Slovakia.

Lawson Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL) led the Canadian offence with a pair of goals, while Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL), Connor Hobbs (Saskatoon, Sask./Medicine Hat, WHL) , Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, B.C./Prince George, WHL) and Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) also put their names on the scoresheet.

Jakub Zboril scored twice for the Czechs, and Martin Weinhold, Filip Suchy and Lukas Jasko added one each.

The Czechs struck early, with Zboril and Weinhold beating Canadian netminder Callum Booth (Montreal, Que./Quebec, QMJHL) before the five-minute mark of the first period.

But Marner got Canada on the board just 2:18 after Weinhold’s goal, ripping a shot just under the crossbar past Daniel Vladar and sending the Canadians to the dressing room down just a goal.

A wild second period featured five goals; Suchy restored the two-goal lead for the Czechs at 2:36, Crouse’s first on a goal-mouth scramble at 5:49 made it 3-2, and Jasko hammered a shot off Booth’s glove and in at 8:16 for another two-goal Czech advantage.

Both teams switched goaltenders shortly after the Jasko goal, with Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) taking over for Booth in the Canadian goal, and Jan Ruzicka replacing Vladar for the Czechs.

The first shot Sawchenko faced was a penalty shot, but Roman Dymacek missed the net.

Down two, it took Canada just 53 seconds to tie the game; Crouse roofed a backhand for his second of the period to get Canada within one, and Hobbs scored off the rush to bring the game back even at 4-4.

With the momentum on his team’s side, Harkins gave Canada its first lead early in the third period, and Roy’s shot through traffic on the power play pushed the advantage to 6-4.

Zboril’s second of the game made it interesting with less than 12 minutes left, but Konecny cleaned up the rebound of a Crouse breakaway to provide the final margin of victory.

Canada opens the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup on Monday when it takes on Switzerland in Piestany (8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT) in search of its seventh consecutive gold medal at the event.
