Intersquad Game #03

WHITE CONTINUE OFFENSIVE OUTBURST IN 10-4 ROUT OF RED

For the second straight night, Team White proved Sunday night’s four-goal performance was just an anomaly, putting 10 pucks past Team Red goaltenders in a 10-4 win on Tuesday night in the finale of the three-game series at the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp in Calgary.

Team White took two of the three games from Team Red, outscoring them 21-17 in the process.

For the third straight game, it was Team White who found the scoreboard first, and for the second time it was Phillipe Cornet (Val d’Or, QC/ Rimouski, QMJHL) who picked up the opening goal, his shot finding its way past Team Red goaltender Peter Delmas (Bedford, NS/ Lewiston, QMJHL) just under two minutes in.

It was a two-goal lead less than two minutes later, as Geordie Wudrick (Abbotsford, BC/ Swift Current, WHL) scored his first goal of the three games.

Just over three minutes into the game, Team Red had yet to register a shot on goal and found themselves in a 2-0 hole, similar to Monday night’s game in which they trailed 5-0 at one point in the first period.

Michael D’Orazio (Richmond Hill, ON/ Owen Sound, OHL) got Team Red on the board with just over six minutes to go in the opening 20 minutes, firing a shot from the point that beat Team White goaltender Kevin Poulin (Montreal, QC/ Victoriaville, QMJHL) over the shoulder.

Despite heading into the intermission down a goal, Team Red were lucky the deficit was not more, as Team White hit two posts behind Delmas in the first period.

Team White continued to apply the pressure early in the second period, and got their third goal when defenseman Jared Cowen (Allan, SK/ Spokane, WHL) fanned on a point shot, but saw the puck go right to teammate Kyle Beach (Kelowna, BC/ Everett, WHL), whose shot beat Delmas.

It took just 1:12 for the lead to become three, as Wudrick’s wraparound attempt found the stick of Kelsey Tessier (Fredericton, NB/ Quebec, QMJHL) who made it 4-1 by beating Delmas.

Team Red started to cut into the lead just past the six-minute mark of the middle frame, as Kevin King (Calgary, AB/ Kootenay, WHL) snapped a shot from the face-off circle that Poulin got a piece, but not enough, of as the puck dribbled into the Team White goal.

The momentum quickly returned to Team White though, as Kyle St. Denis (Trail, BC/ Vernon, BCHL) went to the net and finished off a pass from James Wright (Saskatoon, SK/ Vancouver, WHL) to restore the three-goal advantage.

Both teams made a goaltending change just past the midway point of the period, with Jeff Bosch (Martensville, SK/ Saskatoon Blazers, Midget AAA) replacing Delmas and Jacob DeSerres (Calgary, AB/ Seattle, WHL) replacing Poulin.

Team White gave Bosch a rude welcome, scoring less than 10 seconds after the goaltending change. Cornet picked up his second goal of the game, snapping a one-timer from the slot off a feed from Cody Hodgson (Markham, ON/ Brampton, OHL).

DeSerres didn’t fare much better in the Team White net, allowing a goal on the first shot he faced as well. Just 34 seconds after Cornet’s second, King picked up his second goal of the period, making it 6-3 in favour of Team White after 40 minutes.

As they had in each of the first two periods, Team White was first on the board in the third, as Tessier took a pass from Shawn Lalonde (Orleans, ON/ Belleville, OHL) and found himself all alone in front of Bosch. The Quebec sniper outwaited the Team Red goaltender before putting a backhand past him for a 7-3 lead.

Beach completed his hat trick just shy of the six-minute mark of the period, converting on a pair of penalty shots after a double minor was assessed to Team Red’s Colten Teubert (White Rock, BC/ Regina, WHL).

As in the first two games, any penalties called did not result in two minutes in the penalty box for the offending player, they resulted in a penalty shot for the affected player.

Team Red’s Jimmy Bubnick (Saskatoon, SK/ Saskatoon Contacts, Midget AAA) and Team White’s Joël Champagne (LaSalle, QC/ Chicoutimi, QMJHL) traded goals in the final 10 minutes, providing the final margin of victory.

Team White goaltenders Poulin (14 of 16) and DeSerres (11 of 13) made 25 saves in a winning cause, while Team Red netminders Delmas (19 of 24) and Bosch (17 of 22) stopped 36 in taking the loss.

Team White held the final edge in shots on goal, 46-29.

The National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team will be named on Wednesday morning, and the team will skate at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary at 10:30 a.m. MT.
