2019 IIHF World Junior Championship

Q: Is there a minimum age to volunteer? 
A: Prospective volunteers must be 18 years of age, as of Sept. 1, 2018 in order to be eligible to apply for a volunteer position.

Q: When is the application deadline?
A: We encourage you to sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment; the volunteer assignment process moves quickly!

Q: What is the time commitment required to volunteer?
A: All volunteers need to be prepared to commit a minimum of 24 hours in shifts over the course of the event. Shifts may vary from six hours (minimum) to eight hours in length. (Shift length will vary depending on role.) Please remember that this event runs over the holiday season, and depending on the position you may need to work Dec. 23-25 and Jan. 1.

Q: What types of volunteer positions are available?
A: To deliver an event the size and scope we are assembling a team of 750+ volunteers. Volunteer positions fall under different divisions, including Hockey Operations, Logistics, Game Presentation, Hospitality, Media, Hockey Development and Volunteer, and each division consists of a variety of unique volunteer positions. When completing your application you will be given the opportunity to rank your preferences for volunteer positions. Some positions require specialized skills and work experience, while others simply require a desire to roll up your sleeves and lend a hand. Q: Will I automatically be assigned a volunteer position once I apply?
A: Completion of the registration form is the first step of the volunteer pathway for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship. Volunteer positions will be assigned based on skills, experience and area of interest; requirements are specific to the volunteer position. Only the applicants that have been selected to continue on the volunteer pathway will be contacted regarding next steps.

Q: When will I know if I have been selected as a volunteer?
A: You will receive an email confirmation from the host organizing committee informing you that you have been selected as a volunteer. You will be provided with instructions on how to accept your offer.

Q: What if I need to withdraw from the process?
A: We understand that things come up in life and that you may need to cancel. We ask that you notify us as soon as possible to withdraw your application. We ask that you email us at [email protected]

Q: What if I applied to be a volunteer in the wrong city?
A: If you realize that you filled out an application for the wrong city, please contact us at [email protected] to ensure your application is being reviewed for the correct volunteer pool.

Q: Is training mandatory? 
A: Applicants who receive a volunteer offer and accept must attend the training session. This is to ensure that they are best prepared for their volunteer duties. Volunteers will also receive online training material prior to the training sessions.

Q: Will accommodations be provided for volunteers?
A: Accommodations will not be provided; volunteers are responsible for their own accommodations, if required. Visit the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship website for Vancouver and Victoria tourism information.

Q: Will I be entitled to free or discounted tickets?
A:  Tickets will not be offered free or at a discount with volunteer positions; however, your participation as a volunteer will provide you with a unique experience at this world-class event.

Q: What is the Volunteer Program Fee?
A:  The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship works hard to develop a world-class volunteer program to honour and recognize the contribution of our volunteers. Included in this program is an outstanding apparel package, shift gifting, exceptional meal plan, holiday celebrations and more. The fee is to encourage your participation in the program and overall commitment.

Q: Can I update my availability and information after I have submitted my volunteer application?
A: Yes, when completing your volunteer application you will be prompted to create a username and password that will allow to login and make these changes.

A: Hockey Canada’s 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship website and social media channels will always have the most up-to-date and inclusive information on the championship. Be sure to check them regularly to stay informed on all things World Juniors.
