Camps for Canada's National Women's Under-22/Development Team and National Women's Under-18 Team Start This Weekend in Calgary

CALGARY, Alta. – Eighty of the top young female players in the country will step on to the ice starting Friday at Hockey Canada’s home rink, WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex, for Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camps. Both camps run Aug. 3-11 in Calgary.

The invitation list includes eight goalies, 24 defencemen and 48 forwards and have been based on spring fitness testing, as well as evaluations by Hockey Canada scouts during the 2011-12 season. The 40 under-22/development players will be split into two teams, Blue and Gold, and will participate in several practices and intersquad games, while the 40 under-18 players will also be split into two teams, Red and White, and will participate in several practices and games, including against national teams from Kazakhstan and Norway.

From the selection camps, Hockey Canada will choose 22 players for a three-game series against the United States’ Women’s Under-22 Select Team, and 22 players for a three-game series against the United States’ Women’s Under-18 Select Team. Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team will stay in Calgary to play its series Aug. 14-19, while Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team will travel to Blaine, Minn., to play its series Aug. 15-19 against the Americans.

Lisa Jordan (Westville, N.S./Ryerson University, CIS) will serve as head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team, while Pierre Alain (Mirabel, Que./St-Jérôme, Collégial AA) and Cassandra Turner (Campbellford, Ont./Quinnipiac University, ECAC) will be assistant coaches and Perry Wilson (LaSalle, Ont./University of Windsor, CIS) will act as goaltending coach.

Jim Fetter (Waterloo, Ont./St. Cloud State University, WCHA) will serve as head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team, while Rebecca Russell (Lethbridge, N.L./Okanagan Hockey Academy, Midget AAA) and Laura Schuler (Scarborough, Ont./University of Minnesota Duluth, WCHA) will be assistant coaches and Joe Johnston (Lower Sackville, N.S./Dalhousie University, CIS) will act as goaltending coach.

Following the series, Hockey Canada scouts, along with team coaching staffs, will continue to evaluate players with their club teams during the 2012-13 season, in preparation for selecting the under-22/development team that will compete at the 2013 Meco Cup in Germany and the under-18 team that will compete at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship in Vierumäki, Finland, with both events taking place in January.

Hockey Canada will be holding several female development activities in Calgary, including the 2012 Female Officiating Program of Excellence seminar, intermission mini-games and Experience a Dream, which will give young girls the chance to join under-22 players for off-ice and on-ice warm-ups during the Canada-United States three-game series.

Hockey Canada will also host female high performance branch meetings and the 2012 Female Program of Excellence coaching seminar, which will take place Aug. 8-12 in Calgary. The seminar will feature all coaching staffs of teams competing at the 2012 National Women’s Under-18 Championship in Dawson Creek, B.C.
