Canada's National Men's Team Eliminated in Quarter-Finals at 2011 IIHF World Championship in Slovakia

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia – Canada has been eliminated from the 2011 IIHF World Championship, losing 2-1 to Russia in quarter-final action Thursday. Canada finishes fifth overall, despite having six wins and one loss at this year’s event.

Canada’s Jason Spezza (Toronto, Ont./Ottawa, NHL) opened the scoring on a breakaway at 5:32 of the second period to make it 1-0, but Russia staged a late-game comeback, with Alexei Kaigorodov notching a shorthanded goal at 9:07 of the third and Ilya Kovalchuk scoring the game-winner at 12:19 of the final period.

Earlier Thursday, Finland defeated Norway 4-1 to advance to the semifinal against Russia. Friday’s other semifinal will have the Czech Republic facing Sweden after both teams won quarter-finals Wednesday.

Canada National Men’s Team last won a gold medal at the IIHF World Championship in 2007 in Moscow, Russia. In total, the Canadians have captured 25 world championship gold medals, tied with Russia and the Soviet Union for most all time (Russia has three gold medals, while the Soviet Union had 22 gold medals).
