CALGARY, AB – Hockey Canada announced on Thursday that Canada’s National Women’s Team will begin preparation for the 2007 World Women’s Championship and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games by holding two Regional Conditioning Camps this summer.  The two camps will run simultaneously from June 10th – 18th, 2006 in Calgary, AB and in Kitchener, ON, and will feature 72 of Canada’s top women’s hockey players.

Both National Women’s Team Conditioning Camps will feature many new faces as well as three 2006 Olympians (Meghan Agosta, Sarah Vaillancourt, Katie Weatherston).  The remaining members of Canada’s Women’s Olympic Team have been told by Hockey Canada that they do not need to take part in these camps, but will continue training and testing over the summer in preparation of the National Women’s Team 2006-07 season.

Forty-three players born between 19, including six goaltenders, will attend the Calgary camp which will be held at three locations within Calgary from June 10th-18th: Father David Bauer Arena, the University of Calgary and Optimist Arena.

A total of twenty-nine players born in 1985 or earlier will take part in the conditioning camp in Kitchener-Waterloo, ON which will take place at Wilfrid Laurier University and RIM Park Arena from June 10th-18th.

The City of Kitchener, ON will also be hosting the2006 Four Nations Cup from November 7-11, 2006 featuring the top four countries in women’s hockey :  Canada, USA, Sweden and Finland.  The 2006 Four Nations Cup will be the first major international competition since Canada captured gold at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in February, in Turin, Italy.   Ticket information to follow at a later date.

The players invited to Hockey Canada’s two National Women’s Team Conditioning Camps were identified by Hockey Canada Head Scout Wally Kozak, in collaboration with regional scouts and the 2005-06 coaching staffs of the National Women’s Team and the National Women’s Under-22 Team.

“The conditioning camp kick starts this summer’s training and is a great opportunity for Hockey Canada to get some of the finest young female players ‘on track’ for the future.” said Wally Kozak, Team Canada’s Head Scout. “The camp will give players of all ages a chance to experience first hand what they need to do to become an elite athlete, if they want to be ready to challenge for a spot on the Olympic team in 20.”

“Canada’s success this past February began in the summer of 2002.  Becoming an Olympic hockey player takes many years of dedicated on and off-ice training. ”
