CALGARY – Hockey Canada announced on Thursday the management and coaching staffs for Canada’s National Men’s Hockey Team for two upcoming events in December: the Loto Cup in Piestany, Slovakia – December 15 –17, 2005 and the Spengler Cup in Davos, SUI – Dec. 26 – 31, 2005.  Canada’s roster for the Loto Cup was also announced by Hockey Canada.

Marc Habscheid, Canada’s National Men’s team head coach and associate coach of Canada’s 2006 Men’s Olympic Hockey team, will lead Canada behind the bench as head coach at both events.

Team Canada at the Loto Cup

Prior to the Loto Cup, Canada will play one exhibition game versus Italy in Turin, Italy on December 13th.  Canada will then travel to Piestany, and play three games in three days in a round robin tournament, December 15-17th, along with Switzerland, Latvia and Slovakia.

Former NHL player, Kirk Muller, will join Habscheid behind the bench as Canada’s assistant coach for the Loto Cup.

Team Canada at the Spengler Cup

Hockey Canada has named Al Coates as Canada’s General Manager for the 2005 Spengler Cup in Davos, SUI, from December 26-31st, and Lanny McDonald as Director, Player Personnel for Canada’s 2005 Spengler Cup team.

Coates is in his 35th year of professional hockey administration, including his fourth season with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim’s front office. Prior to joining the Mighty Ducks as senior vice-president, Coates spent three seasons with the New York Rangers overseeing the team and business operations of the Rangers’ AHL team in Hartford. Coates was executive vice-president and General Manager of the NHL’s Calgary Flames from 1995-2000.

McDonald was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992 after playing 1,111 NHL games over 16 NHL seasons, amassing 1,006 points (500 goals).  McDonald has represented Canada internationally six times – three as a player and three times in a management position with Team Canada, including winning a gold medal at the 2004 Men’s World Hockey Championship in Prague as Canada’s Director, Player Personnel.  McDonald also worked closely with Canada’s management and coaching staff of the 2002 gold medal winning Men’s Olympic hockey team.

Coates and McDonald will work closely with Canada’s head coach, Marc Habscheid and Team Director Scott Salmond, in selecting players that will represent Canada at the 2005 Spengler Cup.  Canada’s roster will be announced in the next two weeks.

Dave Lewis, former head coach of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, will join Habscheid at the Spengler Cup as Canada’s assistant coach, along with Sean Simpson.

All of Canada’s games from the 2005 Spengler Cup will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on Rogers Sportsnet.  Check local listings for game times.
