Jim Hulton Named Head Coach of Canada's National Under 18 Summer Team

CALGARY, ALBERTA –- The Canadian Hockey Association, in conjunction with the Canadian Hockey League, announced on Monday that Jim Hulton, Head Coach of the OHL's Belleville Bulls will be the Head Coach of Canada's National Under 18 Summer Team for the Eight Nations Tournament in Slovakia in August, 2002.

Hulton, 32, an NCCP Intermediate certified coach, led Belleville to their 1st ever OHL Eastern Conference regular season championship in 2001-2002. Hulton joined the Bulls for the 2000-2001 after a season and a half as Head Coach of the OHL's Mississauga Ice Dogs. Hulton was an assistant coach with Canada's National Under 18 Summer Team which won the 2001 Six Nations Under 18 Tournament in the Czech Republic in August, 2001.

"I am thrilled about the opportunity to coach Canada's National Under 18 Team," said Hulton. "This summers' development camp and participation in the Eight Nations Tournament in Slovakia will be an important step in identifying and preparing players for future events such the World Under 18 Championship next spring and the World Junior Championship."

The CHA and the CHL also announced the appointment of Hulton's assistant coaches with the 2002 National Under 18 Team: Rick Allain, head coach of the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Dean Chynoweth, head coach of the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds.

The appointments were announced following a thorough screening process carried out by the National Junior Team Policy Committee, which is made up of Dave Branch, president of the Canadian Hockey League and Commissioner of the OHL, Gilles Courteau, the QMJHL Commissioner and WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. The CHA was represented by Bob Nicholson, President, Allan Morris, a vice-chair at large on the CHA Board and Denis Hainault, Director, High Performance.

For a second straight season, Canada will participate in two major international Under 18 events in 2002-2003. Hulton, Allain and Chynoweth have been named to coach the National Under 18 Summer Team, which participates in the Eight Nations Tournament in August.

Canada will play in its second IIHF World Under 18 Championship in April, 2003 in Russia along with 9 other countries. Canada finished sixth at the 2002 World Under 18 Championship. The coaching staff for the World Under 18 Team has not been named.

Allain, 32, an NCCP Intermediate certified coach, has been the head coach of the Petes for three years. Prior to joining Peterborough, Allain was an assistant coach with the OHL's Guelph Storm. During his time with the Storm, the team captured a league championship and reached the Memorial Cup final in 1998 in Spokane.

Chynoweth, 33, an NCCP Intermediate certified coach, has just completed his first season as head coach of Seattle. The native of Calgary, AB was an assistant coach with the IHL's Utah Grizzlies prior to joining Seattle. Chynoweth played three seasons with the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers, capturing two Memorial Cups, prior to spending parts of nine seasons in the NHL with the New York Islanders and the Boston Bruins.

Canada has participated in an August Under 18 Tournament in Europe since 1997, capturing gold at all five events. The coaching staff led by Hulton, will guide the team through a Development Camp from August 1-9. 2002 in Calgary, AB and the Eight Nations Tournament in Slovakia, from August 12-18, 2002.

In the next week to ten days, the CHA and the CHL, along with the CHA's outgoing Director, Scouting Barry Trapp will name the list of players invited to the National Under 18 Development Camp. Details for the National Under 18 Team's Development Camp in August will also be announced soon.
