Sweden Defeats National Junior Team 4-3 in World's Prep Game
STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Johan Forsander's goal at 17:15 of the third period snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted Sweden past Canada's National Junior Team 4-3 in a pre-World Junior Hockey Championship tuneup game for both teams on Saturday.
Canada built a 3-1 lead by 8:15 of the third period, but the Swedes erased that cushion on goals just 16 seconds apart, the first on the power play by Kim Cannerheim at 13:59, the second by Henrik Sedin at 14:15. Josef Boumedienne scored the other goal for Sweden, a power-play effort in the first period.
Josh Holden of Calgary scored a power-play goal at 5:14 of the first period to open the scoring and Vincent Lecavalier of Ile-Bizard, QC made it 2-1 with a second-period power play. Brett McLean of Comox, BC increased Canada's lead to 3-1 at 8:15 of the third period, but Canada couldn't hold the lead.
One reason was a lack of discipline, as Canada was assessed 11 minor penalties, compared to just five for Sweden.
Canada plays the Swiss National Junior Team today in the final of two pre-tournament games Canada will play in Sweden before departing Monday for Helsinki where they will compete in the World Junior Hockey Championship. Canada opens the tournament on Dec. 25 against Finland, the host country.
The tournament opener will be seen live on TSN and RDS, beginning at 11 a.m. EST. The two sister all- sports networks will carry all of Canada's tournament games as well as the bronze medal game and the gold-medal contest.
