2013 Female World Sport School Challenge

Okanagan Hockey Academy 2 - Edge School for Athletes 5

THE GOLDEN EDGE: EDGE SCHOOL FOR ATHLETES WINS FIRST-EVER FEMALE WORLD SPORT SCHOOL CHALLENGE WITH WIN OVER OKANAGAN HOCKEY ACADEMY

WINNIPEG, Man. – The Edge School for Athletes from Calgary, Alta., defeated rival Okanagan Hockey Academy from Penticton, B.C. with a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon at the Iceplex to claim gold at the 2013 Female World Sport School Challenge.

Daria O’Neill (Cochrane, Alta.) had a goal and two assists to pace the Edge to victory. She opened the scoring on the power play five minutes into the game with help from Karly Heffernan (St. Albert, Alta.) and Eden Murray (Medicine Hat, Alta.). The Edge added another power-play marker less than a minute later, as Alex Serpico (Calgary, Alta.) potted her fifth of the tournament.

In the second frame, the Edge added to its lead with a goal from Emily Monaghan (Calgary, Alta.) to take a commanding 3-0 advantage. Okanagan had multiple opportunities on the power play in the second, as Edge School took five minor penalties, but the team from B.C. would only capitalize on one of them. Alexa Ranahan (Salmon Arm, B.C.) found the back of the net to get back within two goals heading into the third.

After both teams exchanged chances throughout the period, Okanagan would make it interesting with a late goal from Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C.), but it was a little too late, as the Edge would ice it with two empty net goals from Heffernan and Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alta.).

Mark Chipman, owner of True North Sports and Entertainment and the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets was on hand to present the gold and silver medals, as well as the tournament’s All-Star lineup.

The All-Star forwards were Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C.; Okanagan Hockey Academy), Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C.; Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy) and Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alta.; Edge School for Athletes),.

The top defencemen of the tournament were Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man.; Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy) and Marie-Jo Pelletier (Dalhousie, N.B.; Rothesay Netherwood School).

The top goaltender was Rachel Dyck (Winnipeg Beach, Man.; Shaftesbury Hockey Academy).
