SAULNIER HELPS TEAM ATLANTIC SECURE STELLAR START

SURREY, B.C. – Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, N.S.) ensured her squad started off on a high note at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship, potting the first goal of the game – and the tournament –and pocketing four points total to lead Team Atlantic in a 6-1 win over Saskatchewan on Wednesday morning.

The veteran forward got the momentum rolling early in the game, using her speed, skill and a pass from Anissa Gamble (Fredericton, N.B.) to put one passed Saskatchewan netminder Samantha Langford (Pense, Sask.) less than seven minutes in.

Fellow Atlantic forward Alex Normore (Bedford, N.S.) followed suit, scoring at 15:32 to give her team a two-goal advantage going into the first intermission.

Jenna Pitts (Antigonish, N.S.) scored a quick one just eight seconds into the second period, with the assists going to Gamble and Saulnier, who snagged her second of the night just over six minutes later.

Team Atlantic continued strong into the third, with goals going to Gamble and Sarah Davis (Paradise, N.L.), making it 6-0 midway through the period. But Saskatchewan put a stop to any chances of a shut-out in the dying minutes of the game, with Bailey Habscheid (Wymark, Sask.) scoring her team’s only goal of the game.

Team Atlantic (1-0) takes on defending champion Ontario Red on Thursday night (5 p.m. PT), while Saskatchewan (0-1) faces off against Ontario Blue in the day’s early game (10 a.m. PT).
