2007 National Women's Under-18 Championship

Ontario Blue  2 -  Atlantic  3

BIG THIRD PERIOD HELPS TEAM ATLANTIC TO VICTORY

Jessica Wong and Janie Leblanc scored third period goals to break open a 1-1 tie, leading Team Atlantic to a 3-2 win over Ontario Blue in the opening game for both teams at the 2007 National Women’s Under-18 Championship on Wednesday.

Wong – who picked up Player of the Game honours for her team – intercepted a cross-ice pass at the Ontario Blue blueline, split the defense with a nifty move and roofed the puck over goaltender Nicole Paniccia to give Team Atlantic (1-0) their first lead of the game.

Kim Deschênes got her team on the board just 4:10 after Isabel Menard – Ontario Blue’s Player of the Game – had opened the scoring in the first period, and Leblanc finished off a beautiful cross-ice feed from Sarah Davis for the eventual game-winner just four minutes after Wong’s goal. Team Atlantic will look to go 2-0 on Thursday morning when they face B.C. (10:00 a.m. ET).

Brianna Delaney also scored for Ontario Blue (0-1), who held a 37-23 advantage in shots on goal, but was turned away time and time again by Team Atlantic goaltender Melissa Murphy, who made 35 saves. They take to the ice next on Thursday night when they face Quebec (7:00 p.m. ET).
