Game Story

MACDONALD, TRUTER, GALLANT COMBINE FOR SIX POINTS IN LIGHTNING WIN

LEE BOYADJIAN

MORDEN, Man. – MacKenzie MacDonald, Chavonne Truter and Kate Gallant, one of the youngest line combinations at the 2017 Esso Cup, controlled the scoreboard for the Durham West Lightning in a 5-1 victory over the Prince Albert Bears on Monday. The trio combined for six points, including two goals from Truter, who just turned 15 in February.

The Lightning came out in a flash in the opening period, scoring with their first shot on net, just 18 seconds in. MacDonald connected with Julie Gough, who let fly from a sharp angle, not giving Bears goaltender Brooklyn Elek much time to work.

Midway through the frame, Gallant was battling in her own zone and helped force a turnover which deflected right to Brianna Brooks. The Lightning centre carried the puck all the way into the Bears end, then got off a quick shot which fooled Elek.

Durham West would finish its first period scoring just under two minutes later, with Truter finishing off a mad scramble in front of the Prince Albert net by jamming in the loose puck.

Prince Albert managed to capitalize while on the penalty kill early in the second period to finally get on the board. Brooke Hobson picked up a turnover in the neutral zone, walked into the Lightning end and caught Kaitlyn Evelyn on the move. The shorthanded goal cut the Durham West lead to 3-1.

But Brooklyn Donaldson restored the three-goal advantage with three-and-a-half minutes to go in the middle frame, crossing the blue-line and beating Elek with a slap shot.

At the other end, Evelyn was kept busy through the second and third, turning away 25 shots through the final 40 minutes and 41 in total. She also got a little help from the crossbar, when Hannah Koroll was left alone at the hash marks.

Truter put the game out of reach just two minutes after the Koroll miss, getting through the Bears’ defence for her second of the afternoon to put the Lightning ahead 5-1.

Prince Albert will look to secure its first win of the Esso Cup Tuesday at 12 p.m. CT when it faces off against the Mid-Isle Wildcats, who are also still looking for their first win. Meanwhile, Durham West has a chance to build on its victory against the host Pembina Valley Hawks in the Day 3 evening game, starting at 7 p.m. CT.
