2010 Esso Cup

Edmonton Thunder  3 -  Thunder Bay Queens  2

STORMY BATTLE BETWEEN THE THUNDER AND THUNDER BAY ENDS IN EDMONTON'S FAVOUR

REGINA, Sask. - Hockey fans who love hard fought back-and-forth action on the ice got exactly that Monday afternoon inside the Co-operators Centre, where Pacific reps the Edmonton Thunder garnered their first win of the Esso Cup by just barely edging Ontario reps the Thunder Bay Queens 3-2.

The stormy battle began when the first puck was dropped, but picked up strength late in the opening period when the Thunder's Heather Kashman (Edmonton, Alta.) cracked the scoreboard by screening the Queens net and deflecting a shot from the point by Laura Bennett (Edmonton, Alta.). at 16:42 on a delayed penalty.

Edmonton  maintained the 1-0 lead going into the second, but it wouldn't last, with Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, Ont.) taking a pretty pass out front from Courtney Tougas (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and putting it past goalie Morgan Glover (Edmonton, Alta.) with just over five minutes left in the period.

Exactly a period later, at 5:23 in the third, Brittany Zuback (Thunder, Ont.) broke the tie on behalf of Queens, putting her team up 2-1 and seemingly swaying the game in Thunder Bay's favour. But less than a minute later at 6:19 the Thunder answered back on another delayed penalty, when Keslie Lang (Edmonton, Alta.) pocketed one with help from Kashman and Rachel Johnson (Edmonton, Alta.)

Enthralled fans watched as the final minutes ticked down on the clock with the teams tied, but with just over five minutes left Kashman snagged her second goal and third point of the night on assists from Kirsten Reeves (Edmonton, Alta.) and Rachel Johnson (Edmonton, Alta.)., helping Edmonton edge Thunder Bay 3-2 in the end.

Glover stopped 38 shots to keep her Pacific team in the game. Player of the Game honours went to Quarrell of the Queens and Kashman of the Thunder.
