BYRNE SCORES HAT TRICK AS ROTHESAY WINS THRILLER 7-5 OVER EDGE GOLD

CALGARY, Alta. – Mitch Byrne scored three goals, Chase Bell tallied two goals and one assist and Austin Beaton picked up three assists as Rothesay Netherwood School improved to 2-0 at the World Sport School Challenge with a wild 7-5 win over Edge School – Gold in Varsity Division play on Saturday.

Bell, Byrne and Jake Barter gave Rothesay a 3-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the first period; however Edge Gold took a bite out of the lead late in the frame as Bruce Maesden netted a power-play marker to make it 3-1 after 20 minutes.

After Austin Holmes netted Edge Gold’s second power-play goal of the game to cut the lead to 3-2, Rothesay pulled away on goals from Francois Boissonault and Byrne again to make it 5-2. Edge Gold again would take a chunk out of the lead late in the period as William Reynish made it 5-3 with another power-play tally for Edge Gold to close out the second period.

Edge Gold defenseman Kade Jensen blasted home his second goal of the WSSC to make it a one-goal game just 21 seconds into the third period and with 7:48 remaining in the game, Edge Gold found a way to battle back and even the score 5-5 on yet another power-play marker - their fourth of the game – this time by Hayden Ursulak.

With time ticking down and Rothesay on a power-play, Bell found the back of the net for the second time of the game, giving Rothesay a 6-5 lead with 1:31 remaining. Byrne would finish off his hat-trick with another play-play marker with 13 seconds left to seal the 7-5 win.

Rothesay Netherwood School will look to keep their unbeaten record alive on Sunday afternoon against the Okanagan Hockey Academy, while Edge School – Gold looks to get back on the winning track when they face the Swiss International Spots & Education Center in the early game on
