Yorkton Terriers (WEST) 2 - Burnaby Express (PAC) 4 Round Robin By HockeyCanada.ca Jovan Matic made sure that Burnaby was not going to see overtime for the second consecutive game. With Yorkton's Scott Woytas in the box for checking to the head, Keith Seabrook fired a shot from the point and Matic was in the right place to slap home the rebound for the game-winner at 10:53 of the third period. The goal game minutes after Yorkton scored two third period goals to tied the game at 2-2. Geoff Irwin added an empty netter to secure Burnaby's first win of the tournament, a 4-2 win over the Yorkton Terriers. On Saturday night, the Express suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss in the RBC Royal Bank Cup Opener after allowing the Derbys to come back from a two-goal deficit in the third. "Our history shows that we respond with a better effort after a loss. The guys felt real bad after Saturday's loss and some complained about the ice being soft, but we bounced back today". said Burnaby head coach, Rick Lanz. " After they tied it up late, we knew that when we had that final power play we could get it done, and we did." Seabrook, brother of current National Men's Team player Brent Seabrook, opened the scoring for Burnaby. Seabrook, an offensive defenceman, pitched in from the point and one-timed a shot high past Brett Bothwell. Burnaby wasted little time taking a two goal lead. After a turnover deep in Yorkton's zone, Paul Crowder finished off a nice give and go with teammate Geoff Irwin. Bothwell had no chance as he was left to fend for himself against the two Burnaby forwards. Yorkton had a few injury scares throughout the game. Chris Korchenski, Yorkton's top goal scorer during the regular season and playoffs, left the game early after being hit hard behing Burnaby's net. Then, minutes later, Chad Nehring left with an apparent cut to the face. Yorkton ran into more injury problems when Scott Woytas lay on the ice for several minutes favoring his right leg late in the second. The good news for Yorkton was that all three returned after short absences. Korchinski made a triuphant return late in the first when he notched Yorkton's first goal of the game. With Burnaby a man down, Yorkton crashed the net and Korchinski was the benefactor, picking up the loose puck after a mad scramble in front of Bryce Luker and made no mistake sliding it into the open cage. Bothwell had a solid game in net stopping 30 shots and was upbeat about his team's ability to come back when down a few goals "Its definitely something to take forward but its still tough to lose." He is already putting this loss behind him and looking forward to the next game versus the North Stars. "We battled our way back but still came up short. Now we just have to put the game behind us and look forward." Justin Menke tied the game at two with Yorkton's second power play goal of the evening. Barry Sparvier took a shot from the point which redirected right to Menke who made no mistake filling the empty net. Yorkton's special teams clicking on all cylinders. Most notably their power play kept them in the game as both their goals came with the man advantage and finished the game 2 for 5. Keith Seabrook has commited to the University of Denver for the 2006-07 season ... Burnaby sports the tournament's worst penalty killing percentage at 68%. |
