RATTRAY ENDS SHOOTOUT MARATHON, GOLD BEATS BLUE AGAIN AT U22 CAMP

CALGARY, Alta. – Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Clarkson University, ECAC) scored the game’s only goal in the sixth round of the shootout, giving Gold its second straight win over Blue at Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team selection camp, 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Gold won the camp opener 4-2 on Monday night at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex.

Rattray went five-hole to beat Blue goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que./Beauport, LDHAAEQ), who was spectacular in a losing cause, stopping all 35 shots she faced in regulation time and overtime and the first five shooters in the shootout.

Her Gold counterpart, Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta./Lloydminster, AJHL) wasn’t as busy, finishing with 21 saves in regulation and overtime, but was just as good, making a number of key stops in the third period when Blue applied the pressure.

Gold held an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal in a penalty-filled first period; Gold had four power plays in the opening 20 minutes, while Blue was on the man advantage on three occasions.

Desbiens was the busier goaltender in all three periods – Gold outshot Blue 9-5 in the second period and 14-11 in the third – but she and Maschmeyer combined to send the game to overtime scoreless, although both had pucks slide across the goal line in the final 20 minutes.

After a goalless extra period, both teams had their chances in the shootout – Blue’s Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) and Gold’s Emily Fulton (Stratford, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) both hit the post – before Rattray finally ended it as the 12th shooter.

The teams will take two days before wrapping up the intrasquad series on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. MT).
