CAMPBELL SCORES TWICE AS CANADA OPENS MLP CUP WITH 5-0 SHUTOUT OF SWISS

KREUZLINGEN, Switzerland – Jessica Campbell scored twice and Geneviève Lacasse stopped all 18 shots she faced as Canada's under-22 women's hockey team opened the 2011 MLP Cup on Tuesday with a 5-0 victory over Switzerland.

Courtney Birchard, Chelsea Karpenko and Laura McIntosh also scored for the Canadians, who led 3-0 after the first period en route to victory.

“Any time you win it's a good way to start,” said Canada's coach Jim Fetter. “I thought we had a good first (period), we sat back a bit in the second, we got a little complacent, and got away from some of the things we were successful at, and in the third period again, we turned it up and finished it well.

“We talked about how throughout this tournament we want to get better every time we step on the ice. Hopefully we continue to roll from here.”

The Canadians, the defending champions in the six-country tournament, face Pool B opponent Germany on Thursday.

“They have good young goaltending, they're a fairly young team, they work hard,” Fetter said. “I think we'll do some video and make sure we're set and ready to go, and we're able to attack and jump on them right away.”

Pool A has Finland, Russia and Sweden.
