| HOWE’S 40 SAVES NOT ENOUGH TO KEEP BLUE AT BAY TORONTO, Ont. – Four different players scored goals to give Blue a 4-2 win over Yellow on the first day of intersquad action at the National Women’s Under-22 selection camp Sunday at the MasterCard Centre. Isabel Menard (Ottawa, Ont.) and Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) both scored in the first for Blue, while Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que./Qc) and Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask.) followed up in the second with goals of their own. Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Qc) got some momentum going for Yellow in the second, putting the puck through the five-hole midway through the period to make it 2-1, but Daoust slid it past the Yellow goal line at 9:03 and Campbell intercepted a D-to-D pass to roof it on the backhand a minute later to give Blue the 4-1 lead. Poulin again tried to get Yellow into the game, scoring her second of the night on a one-timer from the slot to make it 4-2, but her offensive efforts and an impressive 40 saves over three periods by Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont.) just couldn’t give her team the edge it was looking for. Although both teams displayed some nice passing plays and created quality chances throughout the game, including in the third, neither team scored in the final period and Blue held onto its two-goal lead until the final buzzer sounded. |
