2009-10 National Women's Under-22 Team

Game Summary

Red 2 - Sweden 3

SWEDEN GETS INTO WIN COLUMN

Sweden’s National Women’s Team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period and held on for a 3-2 win over Canada Red on Wednesday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

Pernilla Winberg scored the lone goal of the first period when she jammed in a rebound off a point shot during a Sweden power play. Cecilia Östberg made it 2-0 in the second period when she wired a snap shot past Canada Red goaltender Laura Hosier and Erika Holst gave the Swedes a three-goal lead late in the period.

It looked like the Swedes were on their way to a comfortable victory. But Canada Red came out flying in the third period to make things interesting.

At 1:27 of the third period, Vicki Bendus got the Canadians on the board. Less than two minutes later, Leah Copeland scored to make it 3-2 Sweden.

The Swedes then got into penalty trouble. Canada Red had a brief two-man advantage but couldn’t capitalize to tie the game.

Josephin Lennström made 23 saves for the win in net, while Hosier stopped 29 in the Canada Red goal in a losing cause.

The Swedes rebounded after dropping their first two games at the U22 camp, 6-4 to Canada Red on Sunday and 4-0 to Canada White the next night.

The National Women’s Under-22 selection camp continues on Thursday, with Canada White facing Sweden (7 p.m., Father David Bauer Arena). The camp will conclude on Friday, with the two Canadian teams facing off for the second time. On Tuesday, White snuck by Red by a 2-1 score.
