WHITE STAYS UNBEATEN WITH SHOOTOUT WIN

CALGARY, Alta. – It may not be an offensive juggernaut, but Canada White is the last perfect team at the National Women’s Under-22 Team selection camp after a 2-1 shootout win over Canada Red on Tuesday night.

White, which has scored five regulation time goals in two games – and three of those came in an 11-minute stretch of Monday’s 4-0 win over Sweden – needed a game-tying goal off the stick of Laura Fridfinnson (Arborg, Man./University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) in the third period and timely saves from netminder Hillary Pattenden (Surrey, B.C./Mercyhurst College, CHA) just to get to the shootout, where Pattenden was perfect, denying all three Red shooters.

The game was a defensive struggle from the opening face-off, as the two teams managed just 15 shots combined in the first period and headed to the dressing room scoreless. Red finally broke the deadlock near the midway point of the middle frame as Jess Jones (Picton, Ont./Mercyhurst College, CHA) banked a puck off Pattenden and in for a 1-0 lead, but the lead would only hold up until the five-minute mark of the third period, when Fridfinnson drove the net and knocked the puck past Red netminder Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont./Wilfrid Laurier University, CIS), tying the game and forcing overtime, which was scoreless.

Fridfinnson was the extra time hero, sliding the puck under Knox for the only goal of the shootout. Pattenden turned away Lauriane Rougeau (Beaconsfield, Que./Dawson College, Collégial AA), Vicki Bendus (Wasage Beach, Ont./Mercyhurst College, CHA) and Jones to keep White with just one goal allowed in two games – Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont./Harvard University, ECAC) made 25 saves for a shutout in Monday’s win.

White will get a night off from game action on Wednesday, while Red will get right back at it when it takes on Sweden at 7 p.m. MT. The Canadian side had the upper hand in the first meeting between the two teams on Sunday, earning a 6-4 win.
